I'm not that sure why everyone rates Shawcross so highly. Cahill is deffo the better footballer.
I know Ryan is Stoke's captain & I know that Stoke defend doggedly, but I think he's overrated. He was in an England squad toward the end of last season but he is deffo not an International standard player & he will get found out at that level. Cahill, on the other hand, is.
Shawcross had a decent season for Stoke but so do lots of players at points in their careers. I don't think he is a "Tottenham" type of player tho. He has a big heart but not a lot of skill on the ball & he has been found out several times this season. He commits himself to readily & doesn't stay on his feet enough. He's partial to thumping it long too whereas Cahill will play the ball out of defence & the fact that Cahill has been playing under Coyle means he will settle into our way of playing quicker & better.
A lot of people see Shawcross as a future England captain, I don't even see him as an International full-stop. Certainly not a regular starter anyway.

How can you say Cahill is? That is pure speculation mate.
The record books prove you 100% wrong mate. Shawcross has a cap and Cahill doesnt!!!
For me Shawcross is a typical English Defender and will put his foot, head and heart where others wouldnt contemplate going. I fookin love that if I am honest.
Lets face is we have run out of Judas clones so we have to look else where for top top class players.
If we could just find one more Judas/King replica we would be challenging for all sorts of exciting things.
erm, Cahill has an England cap, & he did very well & it was a competitive match too, against Bulgaria - he came on for our very own Dawson & he actually, arguably, had the better game than our Spurs hero. He certainly looked comfortable at that level.
& what cap has Shawcross got? He's been selected for squads (or a squad rather - the friendly against Egypt where we could have near unlimited subs & he still didn't get on the pitch) , but I don't remember him ever getting a game mate. Shawcross only even has 2 U21 caps!! OK, Cahill doesn't have many either but he has more than Shawcross (with 5 U21 caps I believe). Shawcross was actually a Welsh Youth player but he couldnt even play regularly for their international youth teams bar a few U15 games. He's never started for the England U21 either, Cahill was a starter.
Besides, it isnt about how many caps they have, it is what they do with a ball at their feet. Shawcross is not a good enough footballer for Tottenham & I find him a little too reckless even. Cahill is a decent footballer on the other hand who is thriving in Coyle's new "footballing" version of Bolton. Cahill is just as "stick your head where it'll hurt" as Shawcross but he is also better in nearly every department for me bar aerially, where Shawcross is decent. Tackling, passing, he's quicker & has a better footballing brain & he is very good in the air too, altho arguably Shawcross is better there but only just.
Cahill will cope better with the pressure of playing for a top club. Fergie got rid of Sawcross because he did not think he would cope with the pressures of playing for United & I just don't believe he is a good enough footballer for Tottenham.
Whilst I agree to a point that Shawcross is the type of defender you describe, he still isnt as good as people seem to think he is. He has been particularly average this season too.

Gary Cahill for sale: Bolton alert Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham | Mail Online
Bolton Wanderers are ready to cash in on star defender Gary Cahill after revealing their debts had risen to £93million.
The in-demand England defender has been tracked by Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham over the last 12 months and Bolton chairman Phil Gartside admits he can no longer resist an offer.
After announcing annual losses of £35.4m - more than double the figure of 12 months ago - Gartside admited he may also have to sell in-form Johan Elmander when the transfer window reopens in January.
The Sweden striker, who was signed for £8.2m from Toulouse in 2008, is out of contract in the summer and at risk of walking out for nothing. Both Spartak Moscow and Fenerbahce are interested in the 29-year-old.
But Bolton fans will be most concerned about losing 24-year-old Cahill, who has once again impressed at the back during the club's impressive rise to sixth in the table this season.
'If a Champions League team knocks on our door in January that’s the best time to sell an asset because Champions League teams will pay the money,' Garside, who is looking for about £15m, told Bloomberg.
The Reebok Stadium chief, who is also a long-serving FA board member, has called for limits on Premier League players’ wages.
'Owners should be allowed to invest in equity,' he said. 'So if you, as an owner, want to buy a striker for £10million that shouldn’t be a problem.
'But what you then can’t do is pay him extortionate wages that take you out of the break-even situation.
'We are carrying too many on the wage bill. To be fair, nine players are out of contract in the summer, within them heavy earners, and we’ll decide if we want to offer them new contracts.
'I think (Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore) is concerned as much as anybody about the financial state. We keep upping the income and we keep losing more money. It’s ridiculous.'
Bolton’s financial position is not as precarious as was Portsmouth’s when they went into administration owing more that £120m because the Wanderers’ owner Eddie Davies is owed the bulk of the debt.
But on Elmander, Gartside admitted: 'He’s out of contract at the end of this season and again if someone knocks on the door in January then that’s obviously a consideration we have to make.'
Out of the teams that are suggested to be put on alert, Spurs, Man United, Liverpool, Arsenal......out of those we have the best chance to sign this guy if we put at least 10-12 million in for him. I'd welcome him but as I've said numerous times I dont want Steven Caulkers progress fooked with.
Steven Caulker is the messiah!
Cahill was immense against us the other day. I'd take him for sure, I'm just not sure whether we need yet another CB. Yes we're a little short right now but Daws & King will be back by January, plus we've already signed that South African lad Khumalo. On top of that we'll still have Kaboul, Bassong & Gallas who might not be too reliable as regular 1st choice CBs but they're more than adequate back-up.
Still, if it is decided that we need another CB, Cahill would be my 1st choice right now by a mile.

See thats my point Bass, so many of us want another CB in January even though we've signed Khumalo who is unproven sure but I just dont see us bringing in another CB. With that many CBs on our books it just doesnt seem possible in January. Sure maybe in the summer but not now, whether we include the CBs who are injured frequently (King, Woody) we are still left with 5 CBs and that is well enough no matter what happen from January to May when it comes to injuries.
The only reason I could see us signing Cahill in January is that Bolton will need the money and perhaps we'll get some sort of deal for him.
Steven Caulker is the messiah!
By the time the end of the season comes and the transfer windows opens, he might of already been sold to one of the clubs already mentioned. I would rather buy somebody like him in jan and the release whoever is dead wood in the summer. chaill and daws at the back as a regular pairing and king to make the odd rotation when needed?![]()
We'd be raped on the fee in Jan. They dont need to sell and we need to buy. Bad scenario for us IMO.
That is what good players cost now.
If we need or want him then we need to stop acting like a small time club and put up the cash and shut up the bitching on the fee.
We need to kick on, like we should have done in the summer when everything was set up and in place for us to take the next step. I now feel we are a few steps backwards from where we finished the season.
You could maybe see a player plus cash for cahill.....He was outstanding against us and has his had a really good season so far. Not only that he never really gets injuries so imo i would think it would be a great player to add to the squad.
Saying that a STRIKER imo is 100% priority!!!!!!!
My favourite spurs player!
maybe we could offer keano at £2mil in a straight swap- although i think that's me being optomistic! I think he'd be a good summer signing if we release gallas. It would bring the wage bill down and we'd have a good young english defender who could potentially pair up with dawson later on for spurs and england.
My favourite spurs player!
