Update: Sandro agrees Tottenham terms - but Internacional boss gets tough on Brazil midfielder's £6.5m transfer

Brazil midfielder Sandro is understood to have agreed terms to become a Tottenham Hotspur player.
However, his Porto Alegre-based club Internacional and Spurs have a number of obstacles to overcome before he can complete a switch to White Hart Lane.
The clubs were on the brink of agreeing a £6.5million move early last month, but the deal stalled when Spurs failed to meet the Brazilian club's deadline to finalise the deal.

Rain king: Sandro (left) impressed as his club Internacional finished second in the Brazilian league in 2009

The 20-year-old travelled to London before Christmas and has kept in regular contact with the Barclays Premier League high flyers.

Inter Milan have since been linked with Sandro, but Sportsmail understands they have not made an approach to Internacional.
One obstacle is that Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has been told he must sell before he buys. Roman Pavyluchenko would willingly return to Russia to fund the deal, but clubs have been put off by his £15m price tag.
The Brazilian club's new Uruguayan manager Jorge Fossati is also resistant to the deal, despite Internacional already lining up a replacement.
Fossati wants to delay any deal until the summer - after the club have played in the Copa Libertadores, South America's equivalent of the Champions League.

Blow: Harry Redknapp has work to do before landing his man

A further complication is that the combative midfielder is 30 per cent owned by third-party investors. Under English rules, they would not be able to retain their stake in Sandro.
Nonetheless, the player's lawyer Luiz Paulo Chignall is confident that a compromise can be reached.
'There have been talks and verbal agreement on his wages,' said Chignall. 'Negotiations are underway between the clubs.
As I take care of the player's salary, Tottenham came to talk to me. Our part is right, now we need the two clubs to find the missing pieces, but I don't know what they are.
'Looking from the outside, Internacional are interested in having Sandro for the Libertadores. We will have to wait for Tottenham and Internacional to agree.'

      Another update from ESPN Soccernet:

A leading agent has informed ESPN Soccernet that Spurs have had a deal for highly-rated Internacional midfielder Sandro ever since the summer and have only been held up signing him because of work permit difficulties.

Sandro will become a Spurs player if the work permit issue is resolve in the next few days, according to the source, and will add depth to Harry Redknapp's squad as they look to break into the top four in the second half of the season.
"Sandro is a defensive midfield player that Harry Redknapp rates very highly and, once the work permit goes through, he will be a Spurs player,'' the agent said. ''The price is 10 million euros, and the deal has been in place since the summer
"It has just been a question of aquiring the work permit, otherwise all other aspects of the deal have been sorted out some time ago."
Inter Milan boss Jose Mourinho has reportedly been monitoring the situation regarding the 20-year-old Brazilian, but Spurs appear to be on the verge of clinching the deal.

"Modric could play in any team in the world in my opinion, he's a fantastic footballer, top, top class."

We have a deal in place but as pointed out above it is complicated, a further complication has come from Real Madrid who had a meeting with Sandro's 'representative' not sure but I think his dad, this was 5 weeks ago and they have yet to make an offer.

For the money this has to be a good signing, we have been at this for over a year it's about time we got the job done .............

Some people are saying that the deal is done & it is only the work permit holding things up - this, I believe, will be the major sticking point.

I don't really read too much into the Mail article above tho. For a start it alludes to Sandro's alleged visit to London to meet with Spurs just before Christmas but I thought that had already been proved a bogus story.

I don't buy into this "3rd party ownership" business causing problems either as Spurs will always have been purchasing full ownership of the player. It could be the case that whoever it is, other than Inter, who owns the remainder of Sandro's contract is unwilling to sell but I don't believe that is the problem here.

I also 100% don't believe that we "have to sell first". When will people learn that when we say that we don't mean it quite so literally. It might well be the case that we must sell in order to buy, but the order in which it happens should not be an issue. We have players who we know are worth a certain amount & who we do not mind selling & that will be enough to guarantee any incoming transfers. All we want is that by the end of the window we do not have even more players on our books when we already have too many to give them all a game.

I have to say tho, I still cannot see how we're going to wangle this guy a work permit. He is over 20 & he has not even played a full 45min for his national team. Unless he has some dual nationality with some other EU country (Portugal, Spain or Italy for example) I think we are going to be disappointed.

Don't know if this adds much...

Is Sandro Ranieri finally going to join Tottenham Hotspur? Pitaco do gringo’s Brazilian football blog

"According to Sandro Ranieri’s lawyer, Luíz Paulo Chignall, the player has agreed personal terms with Spurs.
However, the midfielder’s representative also made it clear that Internacional and Tottenham have yet to come to an agreement over the fee. “Talks have taken place and we have a verbal agreement over the salary and length of contract … Our part is ok, now we need a deal between the clubs but I can’t say exactly what the situation is [between them]”.
If the deal does go through, Tottenham are expected to shell out around £6.5 million for the 20-year-old. However, signing Ranieri could be complicated as currently the player is part owned by an investment group and this may up the fee Spurs have to pay.
Another possible problem is that Inter’s new coach, Jorge Fossati, has said that he wants the Brazil international for the Porto Alegre club’s campaign in the Libertadores. This could keep the player in Brazil until August 2010."

Internacional confident of keeping hold of Tottenham target - IMScouting

      this one will roll onwards...

'Reports in Brazil today have suggested that Internacional are confident of holding on to midfielder Sandro , who has long been linked with a move to Tottenham.

Spurs have long been rumoured to be signing Sandro in the January transfer window after Harry Redknapp admitted his interest in the defensive midfielder last summer.

However, Tottenham’s pursuit of the player has been stalled due to the fact that Sandro cannot receive a work permit to play in England after only playing one game for the Brazil national team.

Sandro is now set to join up with his Internacional team mates tomorrow who all return for pre-season training. His agent had said yesterday that a move to Spurs was close with a 10 million euro fee agreed between the two sides.

Internacional are eager to hold on to Sandro for the upcoming season where they will be one of Brazil’s four representatives in the Copa Libertadores. But, they had expected to lose the midfielder and have signed Tiago from Mexican side Monarcas Morelia as a replacement.

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has publicly spoken of his desire to bring in another physical midfielder to provide competition for places with Wilson Palacios , Tom Huddlestone and Jermaine Jenas .'
