1) Diamond midfield (DM, RM, LM, AM) where the DM protects the defence (Palacios), the two wingers keep going up and down the pitch to create attacking moves as well as give their helping hand in defence (Lennon, Zhirkov), and the AM can have a free role in order to dictate play as we go forward (Modric).
2) "V" shaped midfield, sort of like the midfield that Villa use at the moment (DM, DM, RM, LM), where you have 2 players sitting in front of the defence (Palacios, Makoun) and two wingers who mainly create attacking moves as their defensive duties are slightly more restricted due to the presence of an extra defensive midfielder (Lennon, Modric).
In short, if we go for option 1, we should buy a LM who has a lot of energy as well as attacking creativity but balanced with good defensive skills and willling to track back, Zhirkov being the best option imo, who we should be able to get at around £15M.
If we go for option 2, we need another man to protect our defence, as Jenas and Huddlestone are just too inconsistent and Zokora is just not really up to scratch. Thus I propose going for Jean Makoun from Lyon, a defensive midfielder who I rate very highly, as he really seems to be a player in the mould of Michael Essien, and if we could buy him for around £12M, it would be a snip in my opinion.
As for the rest of the team, I don't really think we should change our attack too much, as we already have 4 top class strikers who are fighting for their places (Bent included). However, if 'Arry feels that there's something missing or something not right I'm sure he'll fix it.
As for defence, I feel that we're pretty much settled. However, we could use another LB to provide competition for BAE, if not replace him. I recommend Taye Taiwo from Marseille, who I think we could get at around £8M.
