Tottenham put off William Gallas move over former Arsenal defender's contract demands

By Sportsmail Reporter Last updated at 12:26 AM on 11th August 2010

William Gallas' desire for a two-year contract is likely to scupper any hopes he has of securing a move to Tottenham.

The former Arsenal and Chelsea defender has been linked with a move to White Hart Lane with Harry Redknapp eager to sign an experienced centre-back as worries over the fitness of Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate persist.

Free agent: but Gallas is unlikely to seal a deal with Arsenal's fierce rivals Spurs

But like Arsenal, their North London rivals are understood to be only ready to offer Gallas a one-year deal - a stance influenced by the huge wages and hefty signing-on fee the 32-year old defender would command.

Turkish side Fenerbache are ready to grant Gallas' request for a two-year deal while Paris Saint Germain also remain keen.

Meanwhile Spurs are finally poised to seal the loan signing of Croatia international goalkeeper Stipe Pletikosa.

The Spartak Moscow keeper, 31, was in London for talks last night and should sign within the next 48 hours once he completes further medical tests. Manager Harry Redknapp wants experienced cover for Carlo Cudicini and Heurelho Gomes.

I wish Citeh would stop f*cking around and just give us Richards and Bellamy already. They're doing my head in even more now with their reluctance to sell players they don't even want! :@

they wont sell to us its better for them to sell them for someone like stoke or not sell them at all. Thats why Bellamy is saying he may retire because they wont let him come to us where he wants to be

Honestly if i was bellemy i would just sit on there wage bill until my contract ran out. If it was a choice between retiring and or screwing over the club that stopped my move it would be an easy choice. If i had the option to leave to a club i would though.

City need to realize that it not only bothers everybody else in the league when they bully people, it also makes them look like total douches.

Here's an article...I'm saying, yes to the title. But Gallas? William Gallas?

      Redknapp wants title AND Gallas

Published 23:00 13/08/10 By Mike Walters

Harry Redknapp straddled the great North London divide last night and admitted he DOES want to sign Arsenal cast-off William Gallas.
As he challenged his Tottenham team to go for the title, King ’Arry revealed he was trying to pull off a mirror image of Sol Campbell’s shock defection from Spurs to the Gunners nine years ago.
Gallas, who failed to win a pot in four years at Arsenal, is understood to be keen on the prospect of Champions League football and White Hart Lane boss Redknapp claims he won’t have to smash Tottenham’s wage ceiling to land him.
And the controversial defender, last spotted in a trademark sulk as France crashed out of the World Cup in even greater disarray than England, will get the fans talking ahead of the Premier League’s lunchtime kick-off against Manchester City.

Gallas, 33, was released by Arsenal after they refused to offer him more than a one-year contract and Redknapp confirmed: “I am interested in Gallas – I like him, he’s a great free transfer. At the start of the year there were three fantastic free transfers available – David James, Joe Cole and Gallas.
“In the end I didn’t go for James because I’ve already got a terrific goalkeeper here, but I thought he would be a fantastic free transfer for somebody. It’s amazing, he was England’s goalkeeper at the World Cup and a few weeks later he was a free transfer.
“I was interested in Joe, but we missed out on him, but Gallas is a possibility. Wages are not an issue, he has not been greedy at all – we have spoken to his people about it and it’s not a problem.
“He is an experienced player, he’s played at the top level for years and he’s won Premier League titles with Chelsea, so of course I’m interested.
“You can go on forever about him playing for Arsenal, or for Chelsea before that, but we put too much importance on that stuff. If he comes here and plays rubbish, the crowd will slaughter him, but if he signs for us and plays great, they will love him. That’s football, isn’t it?”
Just 107 days since Peter Crouch’s winner at Eastlands settled the shoot-out for fourth place and Champions League riches, Tottenham meet City again today with Redknapp exhorting his players to aim even higher.
He said: “I will talk to the players about winning the title – nothing is impossible and we will give it our best shot. The sky’s the limit and we’ve got to go for it.
“It would be great to see someone different win it. We broke into the top four last season and it’s important to see another team challenging for the title.
“We could do it, we threw away some stupid games last year, and I think it’s going to be a tight championship this season, the betting shows you that.
“We’ve got to push on – now’s our chance. We were miles behind Arsenal for years, but now we’ve got a chance to push them and get above them.
“That would be great for Tottenham fans and it could happen if we could just improve a little bit.”

Eepp. It's not that I mind the fact that he used to play for Arsenal, let's be honest he was a good player. Although that's the problem he WAS a good player. While we could provide backup now and then, he wouldn't take the club forward in anyway. Personally I'd prefer Hangeland or someone like that, would be an excellent signing.

Remember the talk about Sol Campbell returning to Spurs last January. Harry dismissed it pretty quickly because it wouldn't work for obvious reasons.

So what's different about Gallas, Harry?

He talks a load of crap sometimes.

Sky Sports | Football News | Premier League | Tottenham Hotspur | Redknapp keen on Gallas

Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has confirmed his interest in signing former Arsenal defender William Gallas.

The French centre-half has yet to find a new club since leaving Arsenal over the summer and has been linked with the likes of Juventus and Panathinaikos.

However, he could now make the short move across North London to join the Gunners' arch-rivals after Redknapp revealed he has discussed a possible deal.

Redknapp believes the 32-year-old is a 'great' free transfer and is waiting to see if a deal can be agreed for Gallas to link up with Spurs.

      Fantastic free transfer

"I like Gallas," said Redknapp. "I think he's a great free transfer.

"It is a possibility. He has not been greedy at all. His people have rung up and we spoke about it.

"I thought at the start of the year there were three fantastic free transfers available - David James, the England goalkeeper, Joe Cole and William Gallas.

"He is a player I think would be a good player, he is an experienced player. He has played at the top level, he won championships with Chelsea."

Redknapp dismissed his Arsenal connections as a problem and added: "You can go on for ever about that. He played for Chelsea as well. We put too much importance on that all the time.

"If he comes in and plays rubbish then the crowd will slaughter him. If he comes in and plays great they will love him. That is football."

      Sky is the limit
Redknapp is also optimistic that Spurs can push Arsenal all the way this season and potentially finish above their staunch rivals in the Premier League.

He said: "We were behind Arsenal by miles for years and years and years, but now we've got a chance to really push them and get above them. That would be great for Tottenham fans and it's possible.

"If Arsenal had lost their last game of last season we would have finished above them last year. We finished fourth, our best ever finish (in the Premier League) and we have to build on that now.

"It is about time somebody else won the championship. It is not impossible. The sky is the limit and we have got to go for it.

"Tottenham will never get a better chance. We just need to improve that little bit. I still feel we need one or two top quality players to tip the balance for us."
