He did drop deep quite a bit today, though. I remember him in the center circle several times calling for the ball.

I've always said that the reason he was on such poor form at the start of last season was because he was being asked to play out of position a lot. At the time we had a serious problem with the left wing. Bale wasn't in form yet, remember, he didn't get a good run until around the half way point. So Harry was experimenting with Keane on the left, Modric and Krancjar. Between that and rotating with Crouch and Defoe he just didn't get the goals and his form dipped.

Play this man in the proper positions and he will get you goals. Twenty to twenty five a season.

I completely agree with this post, I have been critical of Keane and still dont think he has what it takes but this makes complete sense. However I'm not sure about the goal number you listed at the end of the post. I'd say he'd be good for at least 12 to 15 (not counting the penalties he'd take).

It's a up and down kinda situation with him.

He went to Ireland to clear his head..

Hell, I couldnt even imagine the stress of the transfer window.
On the day before Jorge Valdano was going to give 17 year old Raúl his Real Madrid debut,he went to see Raúl and said "I'm thinking of playing you tomorrow, but I'm worried you might be nervous." Raúl replied "Well, If you want to win, play me. If you don't want to win, put someone else in the team." Raúl Gonzalez Blanco <3

I think it is a little bit of a stretch to say Keane was "played out of position" last season really. He did play on the left against Suderland but that was a total failure & I don't recall him really doing it often. He seems to have lost a yard of pace, which is why he keeps dropping deep to see the ball, & that combined wit low confidence & a loss of conviction are more to blame if you ask me

Regardless, it does not excuse his abysmal finishing last year, something he brought into the start of this pre-season as well, but he does seem to maybe be hitting a bit of form now. Then again, he hit 4 against Burnley last season & it changed nothing

to be honest i dnt think the reason he drops deep is because he has lost a yard of pace i just think that is his natural way to play keane likes to be involed in the play therefore he comes looking for the ball sheringham did the same thing but yes his finishing last year was very poor but hopefully the old kwano is on his way bk now
