@contrast just an idea but still...
there is a train that goes from moscow to sapporo, japan. then trek down through taiwan, the philippines, vietnam, malaysia and singapore arriving in indonesia. you can then jump on a ferry (cheaper on a fishing boat) boat over to oz.
all that lot should cost you a lot less than a return flight to and from australia.
ay yeah, forgot... ryanair £10 from standstead to moscow
The mining industry is Aus' biggest export to the rest of the world and are always looking for workers in the mines. I hear stories of people working the mines for 6-12 months and getting money that would normally take 2+ years to earn. Due to the remoteness of the mines, they are always looking for workers. Not sure about the visa requirements but i would assume coming from UK wouldn't be too hard as skilled labour is short in the country atm.

pretty much depends what you want to do and where you are i suppose. if you use google.com.au you can find job centres etc. aussie gumtree holds loads of labouring jobs and bar work etc. or ask on forums and stuff. i found a few australian forums where farmers would ask for someone to go out and live in the outback and round sheep and stuff like that. i was lucky with the harvest work as a mate of mine had done it before, but the main aussie company is called CBH and they should be easy enough to find. if all shit hits the fan just hit up a call centre till you find something else. or harry the hirer need people all the time and they are in melbourne and sydney. as i say though its more to do with where you are. up the coast fruit picking and things are gonna be the best bet but in the cities you can spread your net further and do whatever. another way is the yha hostels. i stayed in one in sydney. you phone up before you go and they try and get you a job before you go. my mate is in the one i was at now and they got him a job chefing.
