Sturdy northwest cedar...but I also have a massive piece of brick masonry (three fireplaces covering two stories) in the center of the house and a top floor made of stone (the heating ducts run under the stone and the heat from the wood stove in the lower floor keeps the stone floor warm above which does a great job heating the upper level). I'm on solid ground and above the flood plane. We keep storm drains clear of leaves so we don't get any urban flooding. We keep our trees (cedars, firs, oaks and maples) trimmed to help prevent falling limbs from taking down power lines, but heavy ice does more damage to power lines than our trees. We get the occasional big wind storm - had a typhoon "the great Columbus Day storm" in 1962 ... I was at our high school football (gridiron) game that night and when we kicked off the ball went up into the night sky and never came down; the referee called the game at that point - hey, you can't play without a ball! Most of our concern is with flooding from heavy rain and snow melt in the mountains overwhelming the natural drainage system (the rivers) of the region. Earthquakes, tsunamis (and seiches), and wild land fires are next. One summer about ten years ago, we had a fire in Easter Washington that was larger in territory than the State of Connecticut. We had fire teams from as far away as New Zealand helping in the fight, but in the end it was Mother Nature's first snow in early October that finally put out the blaze. Fortunately, the fire was in a remote area of the State and relatively little damage was done to human properties. But with people pushing out into the hinterlands and building closer to natural hazards like volcanoes or building near the seashore or along river banks, the inevitable human suffering from a disaster looms greater and greater. Like the old song goes, "when will they ever learn?" Hey, Boo, it's after midnight in your neck of the woods -- go to bed! Cheers, mate.

The Mad Bomber. Warmest hat I've ever owned. There are days (-30F) when it is so cold you couldn't care how you look, as long as you are warm. This (above) started out as one of those days...

Funny I am remembered for the hat...

Nothing like that--thank goodness! The closest thing might be we are prone to flash flooding in the springtime, but we moved to higher ground in 2004. (I had to swim home to wife in 1999 when she was pregnant with our first child--pretty riveting stuff at the time.) Still, I've gotten pretty good at filling and stacking sandbags. But no kind of emergency preparation required of us like what you must face.

      The short version:

May 99, we had a masive rainstorm. The small river that runs thru our town start rising 3 feet an hour. Within a few hours it was out of its banks and flowing down some of the side streets of town. Some streets--blocks from the river, had water flowing down them. But this was all news to me. I was helping my wife's parents sandbag the front of their house. When we realized it was a lost cause I tried to get home, but all ways home were blocked by rising flood waters--leaving me on an Island. The phone lines were not working and I couldn't reach my wife by cell. I was getting very concerned about her and our house. So I got about three blocks from my house and started to try and wade across a water-covered street. Made it about a third of the way when I saw a tree floating down the street towards me so I just dove in and swam the rest of the way. It pushed me down another block but I made it. Got home to find the water ten feet from my front door and my wife in tears. Our house was somehow spared. The In-laws had 8 feet of water in their home. one quarter of all home in our community were damaged. The water came up Monday, went down Tuesday and Saturday we had a gorgeous daughter--which is another story all in it's own. Best day of my life and the worst day of my life--all in the same week!

nah i saw it on the news it was further off the coast so the way in which the quake shook wouldnt cause a big tsunnami according to some expert. It being further off coast means it shakes horizontally.
