It was subdued.
To suggest that this was a , celebration of an arrogant, cocksure man is both unfair & foolish.
I think it was absolutely excellent the way he reacted, not because I am happy that he is down on himself but because it clearly shows a man who is trying to keep himself in check.
This is the 1st goal & significant appearance since his shameful accident. How would it have looked if he had jumped about the pitch with a big grin on his face? Not very good at all. 1 goal & a good performance does not make up for his mistake.
I was prepared to stand by the lad when he screwed up the other week & I would have been gutted if he had reacted differently. This has shown me that he has both knuckled down & worked hard to produce a performance like that but he is also thinking hard about what he did & is trying to be respectful to the fans, his teammates & the club who stood by him.
His reaction may have been muted but he did not play like a man who had given up nor a man who no longer cared. He was excellent last night, my MOTM (and The Sun's MOTM also).
He applauded the fans & his teammates but he just kept his head down & got on with things on the pitch. I believe he still has a future here at WHL & I know that his performance and his attitude last night has both won over a lot of people & shown me that I was right to have a little bit of faith in him
Let's make no bones about this, 1 performance does not forgive what he did nor does it make up for all the poor showings beforehand but Bentley showed that he is fully aware of that last night & that, combined with the way he played, did show that he has at least now turned a corner.

holly sh1t you guys can read so much in to soo little, are you all shricks. ??
I think it was just a case of .. no one knee slides the fourth goal against Doncaster.. really the whole team was fairly calm about the whole thing.
Cheers

Can’t win for losing…Bentley’s legacy. Let’s take a look back. Showed exceptional promise from the get go…had no shortage of self confidence…made some poor career decisions in retrospect but I would venture a guess that he had input from others. Talented people handle their God givens differently….most just get on with it. Others seem to become consumed by it whether through their inability to differentiate between fawning praise or constructive criticism. There are too many examples of gifted people that have become victims of their own talent (think Best). It’s a personality thing for the most part. The best of intentions can be misconstrued for arrogance but oftentimes it can be as basic as immaturity. The process of growing up tends to bring us face to face with our inadequacies and most of us learn by our decisions – right or wrong. For others…well, some never grow up while others need a truly life altering event to realize that the “it” begins with “me”.
I have been a long time fan of David Bentley. There are few players that generate the same expectation of potential excitement for me. The game starts…the first frenetic minutes give way to a deliberate team tactic…then the cross…or the shot…or the set piece…and after 90 minutes there is a moment…an event that makes this 90 minutes of my life special…because I saw it as it happened. It was special. And a large part of living is remembering.
Football at its best is an art…for the sake of being corny – poetry in motion. Nothing gives me greater joy than to watch a series of well executed moves even if the finish is lacking. Bentley brings that element of the unexpected…as do many others. Recent events…the last twelve months….lead me to believe that DB has finally grown up and that the best is yet to come. And I for one will ne enjoying every minute of it.
Think we might be reading a bit much into this. Scoring against Doncaster is no big deal, especially when it is to go up 4-0. If had celebrated it wouldve been more out of place than him not celebrating. Personally I would love for Bentley to stay. With a bit more time to get things together and recover from these recent events I think he could be very effective. Seems like Harry might agree or he wouldve sold him by now.
It looked as if he was trying to be humble.
