I tried to read this but it was all a bit over my head tbh...what do you think...

After paying 150% ticket prices for many years I want 150% spent on the one thing I enjoy....my only true connection with the match....the only difference I can make to the result is to sing me lungs out.

I want nothing less than the best experts in the field of acoustics to give us a sound to envy ......

      Cheers again bass

Best reply Ive had m8.....and ive had 100 or so now (been plastering this over every forum I can find) ;-)

There has been a lot of science written on the thread and well done to you all but I want to correct you. . . . especially BASSKADET.

A stadium is a completely different kettle of fish to an Opera house or Concert hall. The materials used & such will have little effect within a stadium because you have crowds of people sat on all sides with a semi-open roof.
I know for a fact that the materials used do have a MASSIVE effect on the noise levels. . . A team of the most highly paid engineers were hired to make sure the Emirates stadium was so quite you could enjoy a nice glass of wine and a pawn sandwich followed by a little nap without any interuptions.

I've been there and I can say what an amazing job they did, I was behind one goal, and I heard a coin fall out of the pocket of a man sitting behind the goal at the other end. I even knew which coin it was (a pound coin). It's amazing that new ground.

Seriously, we should make sure that they work on atmosphere and don't f*ck up what we have at the lane.

      Thanks GUSINTHEUK!!!

That might be true in the boxes, etc, but fundamentally building materials, while making a huge effect on sound, are not what are important in the arena itself, other than in the roof. Its more the shape of the stands & the amount of people in them (not just because more = more noise but also because more people will absorb any reflections).

Anyway, I don't disagree with anything being said, I really want the new gaff to be as loud as possible. When you build a room to deaden sound you use particular materials and make the surfaces as irregular as possible, with as much surface area as you can to absorb reflections &, or, direct them away from areas where they become a problem. That doesn't make it 'silent' it just completely removes any 'reverberation' from the room, which results in an unnatural sound.

To make a room 'soundproof' you build a room & surround it with materials that effectively create an air pocket all the way around the room. It is actually very difficult to 100% remove any outside noise from a room & in an ideal world you would surround it with a vacuum. Not easy.

However, there are certain things you could do to maximise sound for sure, I'm just saying that it is not the same thing as you would do in a music venue or Opera house design. The roof could be made as flat as possible and shaped to reflect sound back into the arena. Flat, shiny surfaces reflect sound best such as certain metals and glass do a better job than concrete. Also, Hollow metal rafters would resonate at certain frequencies and have an effect also.

However, the best thing to do (other than the roof thing) is place microphones in specific places to pick up the crowd's ambience & overall sound & play it back over equally carefully placed speakers. I think they might do this already tho because, if you look next time you're at the Lane, you should see mics hanging from the roof above the crowd. It is obviously to pick up crowd noise for television broadcast but they would be daft not to use it within the stadium itself.

However, I know nothing about stadium design but I do know about sound & I am not talking rubbish.

I'm not trying to tell people not to write anyway, I think we should, just don't think that what applies to the Sydney Opera House would apply in the same way here & not to worry too much as I'm sure they'll get it sorted. I have already written my letter to them on the subject & am awaiting a reply.

. . . a nice hollow floor might be good also for when we stamp our feet. That would turn the stadium into a massive 'drum' & could even be 'tuned' to get the nicest sound! Now that would be pretty cool!

Not that its in any way comparable as Spurs fan base and weekly attendance is huge but my beloved local team moved from the old to the new and not only is the atmosphere terrible I believe that the fact that you are often sat next to people you don't recognise or know causes a problem. Some areas of an older stadium have louder and more vocal fans but if they are unable to congregate in together at a new stadium, that can stiffle the atmosphere.

Bayern Munichs Allianz Arena is a superb design and is the kind of thing that would be ideal- steep sides, enclosed, microphones, fans with loud speakers at the front starting songs.

With the way the Premiership is going, new Stadia is the thing to go and with Spurs waiting list for season tickets they should be looking to expand or relocate from a business stand point.

Hopefully if they do, its not at the cost of one of the reasons football is worth going to- crowd noise- passion!

We also need to be as close to the pitch as possible as we are now and not like the Emerates.

Just to say that Levy has just released a video statement on the Spurs website detailing the exhibition, etc. In it he is asked about the actual stadium design & he replies that it will come later but he has been very specific in his brief that he wants an iconic stadium with THE BEST POSSIBLE ATMOSPHERE.

I have to say, he would never have said that he'd asked for a great stadium but to make sure it had no atmosphere or soul, would he, but at least he's said something to say they are thinking about the subject.
