So, you all think that Van der Vaart had a spectacular season for Real Madrid? However, in the World Cup, I don't recall him standing out in any game. And, according to another thread on here, you all think that was because of Wesley Sneijder? Hmmmm!

But tell me, if Raf was such a hot commodity, available (as it turned out) at a bargain price, where were the big European bidders? Manchester United were obviously looking for a midfielder, because they enquired about Mesut Ozil. And didn't Bayern Munich deny that they'd put in an offer for him, even though we picked him up, after that 'offer' fell through?

I admit that Raf is a good player, because I have seen it with my own eyes. However, I'm not entirely sure about him as a whole package. I know for a fact that, during his time at Ajax, he had a lot of trouble keeping his weight down. Someone on here said about him coming to Spurs "so that he can play in every game". What happens if he doesn't? Will he have another hissy fit?

Wax lyrical about Van der Vaart all you like, chaps! Personally, I will reserve my judgement for about 6 games or so. I think some of you are expecting miracles from him. If we get them, I'll celebrate as much as you. But, I'm not holding my breath!

And, of course, when I'm proved to be incredibly wrong, you can all quote this post back at me and make me look a complete fool!

To be fair we are hyping him up a lot, I hold my hands up in this because he is my absolute favorite current player. That said he may not fit in to our system or squad.

Combine that with the fact that he's more a levy signing than a Harry one and it might go pear shaped. So point taken brum, I understand where you're coming from.

But he has been my favorite player since he was a teenager at Ajax so it's hard for me not to be enthusiastic about him playing for my favorite club. I wear my bias on my sleeve, it's a mixture of hope and relief that he didn't go to Chelsea or the Woolich bastards.

    3. These users same thanks for this post

Brum, come on, Whether he played well for Real Madrid last season or not has nothing to do with the World Cup. By that assessment, Wayne Rooney was SHOCKING last year.

Even then you cannot really judge him on Holland's World Cup because he didn't get too many games as Sneijder was selected ahead of him. Actually Sneijder had a bit of an up-and-down World Cup, but he had just won the CL with Inter & so he was not about to be dropped for anyone.

Its not about "waxing lyrical", Van der Vaart is simply a world class player. Sure, he still has everything to prove here at Spurs, but he had settled into that Real Madrid team by last season & was making them tick & you do not do that unless you are amongst the best. By all means reserve your judgement, I'm not trying to say you are wrong to be apprehensive or anything like that, but VDV is a special type of player who is in his prime & who has played at every level in 3 top teams in 3 different countries. He is exactly the type of player we should be getting excited about & what's wrong with getting a little carried away every now & again?

I know you're worried for Niko's place in the team but, like I said before, VDV's addition will effect Niko's chances much less than if we had bought, for example, Ashley Young. By the way, VDV picked Niko out for special mention when talking up the Spurs squad:

"It's a great club. I've looked through the squad and it's one of the best squads in Europe. We have great players, young players. One of the first players I met was William Gallas. He's a great defender, big, strong, I'm glad I'm on his side! We have Luka Modric, Niko Kranjcar, Robbie Keane, Jermain Defoe is one of the best strikers around, Aaron Lennon is so quick, Gareth Bale, so many good players, I could go on and on."

You're entitled to your opinion, Bass. And I'm entitled to mine!

Let time be the judge, eh?

EDIT (following YOUR edit): Why has Niko been brought into the discussion again? Frankly, I'm not that much more concerned about his position in the pecking order than I was two weeks ago and have already stated in this thread that I don't see why he and Raf can't play together.

I am a great fan of van der Vaart and like Brumspur I have seen him play a lot of games at Ajax. We always had the discussion if he was able to play with Sneijder on one midfield or not. This was back in the day when van der Vaart played a couple seasons for Ajax and Sneijder just broke through. I always preffered van der Vaart on the attacking midfielder position because he was more of a player that had an eye for his fellow players and Sneijder was a dangerous player with a devastating long distance shot. But as the years passed, Sneijder came better and more complete and I have to admit that he went beyond van der Vaart. Van der Vaart was actually in a dip and he had to go to HSV (which we didn't see as a step forward at the time). So Brumspur has a point if he says that van der Vaart is not the absolute best midfielder there is. At HSV he took revenge on us though and he developed as the attacking leader and got his transfer to Real Madrid and I believe he would be in the starting eleven there if Real Madrid was n't full of shit and politics. So he is a good player but he lacks some of the (physical) assests of the Kaka's and Ronaldo's of this world. Mentally he is a better then a Ronaldo though and he is form was way better the Kaka's form at Real Madrid. He is no magican but my bet is that he will be a excellent player for your team.
