SPURS have moved for Everton's Steven Pienaar as they start building for what they hope will be an assault on next season's Champions League.
Chairman Daniel Levy met with representatives of the South African playmaker yesterday to discuss a deal.
Pienaar's people then headed off to meet Everton officials for talks about a new contract at Goodison Park.
The ace, 28, has only one year left on his current deal and the signs are he is ready to quit.
And should Everton fail to persuade Pienaar to stay, Spurs have an interesting carrot to dangle in their direction - Robbie Keane.
The striker , who briefly played across Stanley Park for Liverpool, is back at Spurs having spent the second half of the season at Celtic.
However, it is difficult to see any long-term future for the Irish star, 29, at White Hart Lane and a switch back to Merseyside, with Pienaar going the other way, could suit all parties.
The South African joined Everton from German side Borussia Dortmund for £2million three years ago and has been a huge hit, scoring 11 goals in his 106 appearances.
He started his professional career in the famed Ajax Academy, playing more than 100 games before his move to Germany.
His seven goals in 37 appearances this season have cemented his place in South Africa's squad for next month's World Cup finals.
Keane has spent the last three months on loan north of the border after being shipped out by Spurs on the final day of the transfer window.
He was only one year into his second spell at White Hart Lane, following a disastrous seven-month spell at Liverpool, who paid more than £20m for him.

A quality squad signing imo.
However, i think we shuld be focusin upon a top notch striker.
"Modric could play in any team in the world in my opinion, he's a fantastic footballer, top, top class."
Would prefer Joe Cole tbh.

I would take him if the price amounted only to a straight swap with Keane
<------ Arsene Wenger
Good shout BigDub but if we are also serios about cole we could end up with 7 wingers
Bale, Niko, Modders, Lennon, Bentley, Piennar and Cole.
Perhaps we will cool our interest in Cole and focus our attention on Dzeko.
Im soooooooooo Excited![]()

I really think he is overhyped and overpriced, he has had the best season he will have but I think he is being overpriced and isnt better than Blae, Lennon or Kranjcar. I'm not saying he is a bad player by any means, but I dont really see him making an impact on our team. Id rather we invested more money on a top quality left back, centre back and striker than buy another utlity wide man.
if we want width wed be better off going for a younger proposition that although a risk, costs less
Pienarr for me is alot better than kranjcar and hes was great for everton last season too. watch some of their games and you willl see how special and strong he is.
New link with Pienaar but United may join the race to sign him as well:

i dont want Niko to leave personally but if we was to buy pienaar & Joe Cole that gives us a midfield of Lennon, Rose, Pienaar, Cole, Niko, Bentley, O'Hara, Palacios, Hudd, Sandro, Modric, Bale. i just think those 4 players wont be happy playing second fiddle and i hope im wrong on Niko & Bentley as i'd love them at the lane for a long time
