Well this is my take on steroids they enhance athletic physical performance and but never have I heard it enhancing hand eye coordination which is what you need above all else to hit those home runs.

I didn't say they need that only but it is the majority of it there are plenty of bulky players in MLB but can't hit worth a damn if you are running a marathon you want to focus on running not weight lifting right?

The only performance-enhancers Babe Ruth ever used were whiskey, cigars, and expensive hookers.
People forget that when he was traded from the Red Sox to the Yankees in 1917 (I think) he was the best PITCHER in the league. Then he hit 60 HRs when the ball weighed like 1/4 again more than today. Only Jim Thorpe rivals him for greatest American athlete, IMO.
Steroids have caused me to lose interest in baseball, tbh.
Also remember Ruth struck out more than he hit home runs he wanted to make every hit a home run not many people know that.

my ultimate take was this. If MLB never made steroids illegal till mid-2000 then how can you consider anyone taking them cheating? its not cheating if it isn't illegal in your game and they don't test for it.

From my understanding, MLB banned the used of steroids way back in the early 90's. It was the testing that was made compulsory in the mid 2000's. But, wasn't because of Canseco's book that highlighted the widescale use of the drug?
At the end of the day, my take is this, anything that gives an unfair disadvantage is cheating - be it steroids or a corked bat.

Building up your bulk illegally & unnaturally will unfairly add distance to your hits = cheating
