Fabio Capello says money is to blame
Manager admits scandals have had an effect
Fabio Capello has blamed the off-field problems that have threatened to undermine England’s World Cup hopes on the vast wealth accumulated by many of his players.
The England manager conceded for the first time yesterday that the recent scandals involving John Terry, Wayne Bridge and Ashley Cole have had an impact on the camp. Capello believes that the huge salaries collected by the leading players — Terry's basic wage of £160,000 a week is the highest in the squad — cloud their judgment and lead to a culture of irresponsibility.
The Italian has experienced similar problems as a coach in Spain and Italy and has not altered his opinion that footballers should act as role models to the rest of society, particularly children.
As he prepared his side for the friendly against Egypt at Wembley tonight — the final match before he names his provisional World Cup squad in May — Capello urged his players to take great care in their personal lives in the build-up to this summer’s tournament in South Africa.
“The private life is a big problem for some players, but also brings big problems for the clubs and for me,” Capello said. “Young players, young boys, rich boys, this is the problem. It’s not only here. In Italy, in Germany, in Spain and in every country where football is so important.
“They have to be an example to the children, for all the fans. For that reason they have to stay careful and sacrifice something in their lives. It will be really important in this last period to be careful in their own lives. I ask them to take no chances.”
Capello repeated his message to the players before training on Monday, telling them that they cannot afford off-field distractions if they are to have a successful summer. He is tired of being briefed about humiliating headlines involving his players, and after relieving Terry of the captaincy will not tolerate any further indiscretions.
“I told the players we have to recreate the spirit of the group and train really focused,” he said. “I want to speak about the performance. I want to speak about the style that we played, only about what really happened during the game. Not outside the pitch.”
Capello’s views appear to have hit home, at least according to Steven Gerrard, who will captain the side against Egypt in the absence of Rio Ferdinand. The Liverpool midfield player revealed that he is so focused on the World Cup that he has banned his wife from flying to South Africa unless England reach the semi-finals, and that all the players have taken the threat of being dropped by Capello with extreme seriousness.
“It was short and sweet and he told us to focus on the football,” Gerrard said. “He reiterated that we have responsibilities as players both on and off the pitch. All the players take it as read what the manager says. We understand what he wants, listen and take note.”
Capello intends on naming a strong team this evening but will make use of his six substitutes to ensure that fringe candidates such as Joe Hart, Stephen Warnock and Leighton Baines all get some game time.
Capello admitted to being worried about how the crowd will treat Terry and urged the fans to get behind the team. “I know they are worried after what has happened, but I hope they will help us,” he said. “They have to understand that the private life of some players has not been so good, but that on the pitch it will be different. We are dressed in the England shirt and it’s important for us that they help us.”
