Van Der Vaart to leave Real

Van Der Vaart looks set to leave Real Madrid this winter & has put many clubs on alert by refusing a return to Ajax & claiming he will have many options to consider.

The Daily Mail claim we have been 'heavily linked' to the Dutchman. He would be a serious coup for us if we did manage to lure him to Tottenham & with Harry perhaps looking at leaving O'Hara on the south coast, could we be looking at Rafael as his replacement? I blimmin' hope so!

Harry recently said how most teams have 6 CMs whilst we only have 3 in JJ, Hudd & Palacios. That certainly implies that we will be looking for at least 1 CM this winter, probably a defensive mid 1st & foremost, but how many might we end up going for. I thought it interesting how Harry only highlighted us as having 3 CMs, despite O'Hara being currently scheduled to return in January. That heavily suggest that O'Hara would be staying at Portsmouth but we'll see I guess.

RVDV isn't exactly a like for like replacement for Jamie in terms of style but he is in terms of where his favoured position is. As a left-footed, attacking central midfielder (of which we have very few, if any, here at Spurs), they don't come much better than Van Der Vaart.

He won't come cheap tho & you can guarantee that there will be plenty of interest. Its unlikely we'll be seeing him at the Lane next January in my humble opinion but never say never & 2 things are for sure, he won't be at Madrid & he won't be at Ajax either

You have to remember that we have captain fantastic playing LW at the minute and Kranj when he gets a minute or two is doing OK as well.

I think if they are gonna splash the cash it will be through the spine of the side. And rightly so IMO.

A world class CB, CM, CF is what is needed. If he can do it through the middle then yeah I think he is what we need as his versatility with modders could seriously open teams up.

He is the right player to have if we are looking to play a 4-5-1 or a 4-3-3.

I really think you can say this about alot of players we are interested in. This also includes players re-signing contracts ie..... (Modric & Lennon)

Yeah its a tough ask though, but far from unrealistic.

We need lady luck right now and Levy to make a string commitment to making it a reality.

I do hear what you are saying, Unit, but VDV doesn't really play wide left, he can, but its not his best position. His best position is as a central, attacking midfielder. If you ask me, we could still use one of those as JJ doesn't really do the job. We either get an out & out LW & look to move Modric/Kranjcar in as CAMs or we bring in a quality CAM & leave Modric/Kranjcar doing what they're doing. VDV could do both I guess, which would mean he is a good option.

As I said in my initial post, Harry said how most teams have 6 CMs & we only have 3. That would certainly suggest that he is looking for more than 1 & I would guess that 1 will deffo be a DM, meaning that the other would be of a more attacking variety. If O'Hara does stay in Portsmouth, VDV would not just be a great replacement, he would be incredible!

Yes please, would offer something different, a bit of that top 4 class. If we get him almost certainly end of the road for Adel and Gio however? Hard to fit so many attacking players in a squad, without the restless ones wanting to leave... hopefully not

If England is his destination, I'd think we would have as good a shot as anybody- can't see Chelsea, Liverpool or the scum bidding on him, or Man City for that matter. Maybe United, but he doesn't strike me as a great fit for them.

I've promised myself not to get my hopes up on transfers, and I'm going to stick to it. He'll probably end up in Italy

The key to this deal is sorting out his wife's healthcare.that's the only reason he remained in Madrid to begin with.

Do we really need another attacking-minded midfielder? We're totally gonna destroy the balance of our midfield if we have offensive minded players like Modders, Lennon, Bentley, Gio, Taarabt, Kranjcar and VDV and then as our defensive minded players we have JJ, Hudd, Wilson and O'Hara, who might end up staying at Pompey anyway. Don't get me wrong, VDV is one of my favourite ever players, but I just don't feel like he's what we need right now. I'd prefer to have another defensive minded player alongside Wilson to free up the likes of Lennon and Modders to attack and rip our opponent's defence a new one!

cmon, I disagree with you mate. Yes we have plenty of attacking wide players, but we are light with those more central. JJ is never supposed to be deployed defensively, his job has always been further up the pitch but other than him, who do we really have? We can play Niko or Modric there but we have NO left footers at all so, if anything, VDV will help balance our team, going forwards anyway. We still need a defensive CM too, more importantly, but there is deffo room for VDV in our squad, especially if O'Hara stays down south
