According to the Daily Mail today, Spurs are plotting a January raid on Bolton for their young CB Gary Cahill.
He would be an excellent buy if we can get him as I think he is up there among the best young, English CBs in the entire league - a million miles better than previous target Anton Ferdinand!
However, I would be surprised if we were successful in our attempts. It's no secret how highly he is regarded by Bolton & Megson has stated in the past how he will hold onto Cahill at all costs. Arsenal tried to get him over the summer & were quoted a ridiculous price & it appears as tho nothing has changed as the Mail claim we have been quoted in the region of £20m!!
There is no way he is worth anything like that amount. However, we have all seen in the past these sorts of tactics (e.g. Seb Bassong) & should a reasonable offer actually hit the table I'm fairly sure that Bolton would find it difficult to turn down.
Spurs to spend £20m to bring Cahill to White Hart Lane

He has certainly improved since his Villa days, as I recall when Villa attempted to offload him January 2008 the only clubs interested were Birmingham City, Bolton Wanderers and Turkish club Beşiktaş J.K. not exactly a 'hot property'. He is now 23 and has dropped out of the England scene in the last 18 months, before that he was getting a few games for the under 21's.
As a CB 23 is still young so would make a good financial investment as he will have at least 10 years of playing time (transfer value) left in his career.
If we could add him as a squad player for 8m, as you mention Bassong style, then OK. But for 20m we must be able to buy a better and more experienced player from the continent.
“Show class, have pride, and display character. If you do, winning takes care of itself.”
He's just re appeared on the England scene Elite, been called up to a few squads. Quality defender, would be a sound addition and would leave us with Bassong, Cahill and Dawson as long term options with Woody and King still in the mix. Cahill seems not be injury prone, alas, but im sure things might change if he were to pull on the spurs jersey!
£10 and i'd be happy, anything else is steep. In my eyes, we need 2 players in Jan. A centre back, and a midfielder similar to Palacios. If it were up to me i'd say Cahill and Sissoko, for about £25m, would be great business. But i can't see it happening!
Bolton say they are using Lescott's £24m move to City as a yardstick but, as you point out, Cahill is not really a full England international whilst Joleon is, so you cannot ask for a similar fee in my opinion. I actually think Cahill is better than Lescott tho, certainly defensively & I personally think he could become a very solid defensive option for us should he arrive

I really liked Lescott at Everton... but i think that was largely due to Jagielka, who is pure class imo and he must be easy to play alongside! Now if spurs could have him....
No one is going to pay that much for Cahill, Bolton know that. If he eventually wants to move on, they'd most probably go slightly lower. Do you think he's a better defender than Dawson? I ask as i've seen a bit of Cahill but heard more than i've seen, so cant really compare.

He's quite similar to Daws in the way he plays. I don't think he is quite at Daws' standard when Daws is at his best but perhaps Cahill is more consistent. He also, I think, has more potential than Daws & that potential might be realised at a bigger club than Bolton. He is quicker & is less prone to silly mistakes but Daws is just so good at what he does &, imo, is like a 1 man shield in our penalty area when he is on song, letting nothing past.
The thing I like about Cahill, & its something we lack at the back, is his full-blooded & passionate approach to every game. You never see him shrinking into the background or wilting when the going gets tough. You can really see how much it means to him & we could certainly do with some of that.

I thought it was Evertons Cahil and still thought that 20 million was well steep.
I think we do deffo need to buy a 20 million pound defender but this kid is not worth that price tag and never will be.
Jagielka is better and cheaper, fook me Carvalhio wouldn't set us back that much.
We 1 billion percent need to address the Ledders/Woody issue as these world class defenders are not going to last much longer as the injuries are now starting to come thick and fast unfortunately.
I dont know who else might be in the window for that considerable ammount of cash come Jan.......................Enter Bass!!!![]()
£20M is a crazy price. I'd rather have Fabiano Santacroce from Napoli, who I'm sure we could snap up for under £10M. He's being tipped to be the next great Italian defender and he looks really good for his age from what I've seen of him. I'd love to have someone like him at the Lane.
COME ON YOU SPURS!!!
Micah Richards?
I cant see Harry or Levy paying that much for him , maybe a makeweight deal but not all money .
I was getting all excited when I thought we were linked with Tim Cahill. Can't comment much on Gary Cahill, but i'm sure we can get better value for money elsewhere. Theres new talent coming through everywhere, we just need to spot it sooner.
Anyway, Wheater is the one I would go for. Although Boro wuld prob not sell.
wouldn't want either Cahills
I rate Gary, a very well rounded CB, obviously 20mill is just silly and im sure Bolton know that too, they just want to keep hold of their best talent, alongside Bassong in a few years time sounds pretty good to me
wouldn't mind tim. good player
Man U after him now apparently
