David Bentley has been lined up in a sensational £15million player-plus-cash move to Manchester City.
Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp is close to a £5m deal for City’s Bulgarian left winger Martin Petrov.
But big-spending City and Tottenham are also discussing a last-gasp deal for England international Bentley to go the other way, with cash also changing hands.
Bentley, 25, who last week was banned from driving for 12 months for a drink-driving offence, joined Tottenham for £15m a year ago.
But he has struggled to win a regular spot and also lost his place in the England set-up as he has failed to win over the Spurs fans.
Everton, Aston Villa and Sunderland have all been interested in signing Bentley and Spurs are prepared to sell - as long as they can bring in a replacement.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is also demanding that he gets back almost all of his £15m outlay on the former Blackburn winger.
That has put off other clubs, and Everton even failed with a loan bid, but mega-rich City have the finances to sign Bentley and add the England winger to their expensively assembled squad.
City boss Mark Hughes managed Bentley during their time together at Blackburn and helped turn the former Arsenal trainee into an England international.
That prompted Tottenham to enquire about a possible player-plus-cash deal involving Petrov, 30, who was yesterday pulled out of the Bulgarian national squad to allow him to discuss a move to White Hart Lane.
Petrov nearly went to Tottenham two years ago but, after suffering a long-term knee injury, is now surplus to requirements at City.
But Tottenham are anxious to boost their squad after losing Croatian international Luka Modric for up to three months through injury.
Tottenham also made a cheeky enquiry to take Portsmouth’s Croatian midfielder Niko Kranjcar on loan, but now appear to be getting Petrov in a shock last minute deal.

EXCLUSIVE: Man City in bid to snap up Bentley: Spurs to land Martin Petrov in swap deal and get Pompey's Niko Kranjcar for £2m

David Bentley is set to be handed the golden ticket of a move to Manchester City, who last night closed in on a swap deal with Tottenham involving Bulgaria winger Martin Petrov.
The initial deal for Bentley will be a long-term loan, but it presents the chance for him to restart his career after a dismal 13-month spell at Spurs, who are also signing Niko Kranjcar from Portsmouth for a cut-price £2million.
If the Bentley deal can be completed before today’s 5pm deadline — and both managers want the deal to happen — then he will be reunited with Mark Hughes, the boss behind his most productive spell at Blackburn.

It will also see him join the superstar cast of the City dressing room a week after a conviction for drink driving, for which he received a one-year ban. Bentley was also fined two weeks’ wages by Spurs for crashing his Porsche into a lamppost while under the influence.
Bentley has seen his career nosedive since moving from Blackburn to Spurs in a £15million deal last summer — the player has yet to start for Spurs in the Premier League this season.

The deal also suits Spurs manager Harry Redknapp, who is looking for a left-sided
player to replace broken leg victim Luka Modric, who is out for at least six weeks. Chairman Daniel Levy was spearheading the talks last night.
Bulgarian Petrov, 30, a pacy winger, will want to prove himself after falling out with Hughes while Kranjcar will team up again with Redknapp, with whom he helped Portsmouth win the 2008 FA Cup.

Tottenham were keen on Petrov prior to his £4.7m move to City from Atletico Madrid
two years ago. However, the Bulgarian, capped 77 times but with only one year left on his current contract and valued at £3.5m, has slipped well down the pecking order at
Eastlands following the wave of new arrivals this summer.
Petrov was allowed to emain in England while he sorts out his future by Bulgaria coach Stanimir Stoilov ahead of World Cup qualifiers against Montenegro and Italy.

He could still sign even if there is a snag in Bentley’s move. Spurs rate Bentley at around £12m and rejected an £8m approach from Aston Villa.
Petrov spent last night in a London hotel and his move to Spurs was backed by Manchester United forward Dimitar Berbatov, his Bulgaria team-mate. ‘I hope Martin goes to Spurs,’ said the ex-Tottenham star.
‘He does not deserve such a relationship with Manchester City and Spurs are a bigger club than City.’

most interesting part of this article was the Berbatov quote backing Petrov's move to Spurs.
I like Petrov of as a player, but didnt he reject us a few years back, after Berbatov wanted him to join him at the Lane?
Would def not say no though as I have wanted a natural left winger in the team for a few years now and after many transfer windows not getting on I didnt think it would happen.
I can just c Bentley becoming great again though and that thought aint great as it may not be with us but with another top 6 rival!!!
In a world full of City's and United's...there is only one Hotspur
lol, everyone knows we're a bigger club than Citeh. We don't need Sulkatov coming out and trying to defend us like that!
I doubt this Bentley swap will happen, it's not a like for like replacement and if it did go ahead we'd have strength in depth on the left but not on the right.

Sky Sports news are reporting this so its not bull **** lol
We should hold them to ransom and do a Everton on them. Extort as much money out of them as we can along with Petrov and get a good midfielder in with the cash. Sissoko anyone?
On another note i think Harry sees Krancjar as a center mid, he has played there alot with pompy and also featured on the right. So we could potenially have Petrov and Modric on the left, Lennon and Krancjar on the right, Jenas, Hudds, Palacios and new someone new in the middle.
