Tottenham and Fulham have been put on alert after Schneiderlin, 20, was told by U-21 chief Eric Mombaerts he must quit League One Saints to save his international career.

St Mary's gaffer Alan Pardew fumed: "The hard part for me is when an international manager says players won't be selected if they are playing in this division.

"It is a terrible thing to say and I don't think it's fair - it is insulting. My view is that Morgan should stay here at Southampton and concentrate on us."

Schneiderlin cost Saints £1m when he signed from French club Strasbourg in the summer of 2008.
