. . . who would you like us to try and bag on the cheap?

Maybe Downing. I was saying that he could easily be a £12-£15m player but his continued inconsistency at International level has changed my mind. Also, the fact that Boro wouldn't be able to keep him anyway I would hope to get him a LOT cheaper anyhow!

I would love to see us go for Tuncay. I really like watching him play, although he is a little bit too much like Keano. Full of energy & never stops running, will drop deep but will also nick a few goals. He has a few tricks up his sleeves too & I think he would be good at a bigger club than Boro.

Martins I think still has stuff to prove in the Prem but I think he would still be a great signing for us. I don't believe he is helped much at Newcastle by his midfield & he would work much better with players like Modric & Keane around him. He has one of the best shots on him I've ever seen & has been the bane of Spurs many a time!

Sebastien Bassong I think Keegan's last great purchase. He bought him with development & the future in mind but he has filled in for Newcastle's leaky defence this year & has not looked remotely out of place. In fact he's looked 10x more assured than the more experienced likes of Cacapa, Coloccini or Geremi (who have all been pretty dire at times). Still I think Bassong could soon become a very good player & could probably be acquired for a minimal fee.

I dont think there are any bargains to be had mate = we all know that when players invoke the get out clause the sharks start swinming . But players that are coming from a relegation team - really need a big pick up to get them firing again , I think we suffered when we took Defoe after the spammers went down .

Perhaps its me but i dont remember any player being brilliant for a premiership club after he was in a team that went down .

Here "WE" go which team won the premiership league with a player that was in a relegated team the year before .

Heard Bassong was going to the Gooners.

Dont even rate Downing thart much tbh. I will say no one at all really guys, boring i know but dont think any of them will improve our squad.

      Lampard? Joe Cole?

Kanouté was a decent buy for us too at just £3.5m

Di Canio also did well with Charlton after they bagged him on a free

Sørensen was a bargain for Villa also.

Trevor Sinclair did OK when he went to City & got himself back in the England team

Mark Viduka did OK too when he first joined Boro

It can happen! But generally I agree with you but then generally teams with the calibre of some of Boro & Newcastle's players don't get relegated.

It's a shame Duff is passed his best as in his day he would have been perfect for our left side, especially linking with Keano. When he left Chelsea he very, very nearly came to Tottenham, the offer was certainly in the table from us, but he refused on the basis that he did not want to upset the Chavs. He was never the same player anyway.

Tuncay is the pick of the bunch.

Martins will be at the Scum and I aint that bothered by downing if he is in excess of 10 million quid.

I think the trouble with Duff will be his proneness to injuries and his wage demands. I think his wage demands were a major flaw in him going to the Toon and not us.
I like the idea of having him and Keano in the squad together but is he really worth the gamble?, we dont fair well with fragile players really.

I don't think Duff is worth the gamble, not anymore. He really has declined at Newcastle & is a shadow of the player he was at Blackburn & Chelsea.

I agree Unit, I think Tuncay is probably the best of the lot but like I said, I wold worry that he is a little too similar to Keano. I would still take him tho, if the price was right, & that Bassong kid.

At the beginning of this season I would be screaming we went in for Coloccini if this situation occurred but not anymore. He has been AWFUL. I keep hearing commentators trying to big him up & he has had the odd decent game (annoyingly against us!) but most of the time he has been proper pony! Bassong has looked twice the player!

We need a big target man to play off Robbie love to see Martins saw him for Inter in pre season couple of years a go at the Lane and looked a better player then than he is now for geordies.

I think Downing is a done deal. Bassong looks decent at left or centre back, but I'd sooner sign Warnock from Blackburn if we get the chance.
