Tottenham Hotspur Chasing Real Madrid's Gabriel Heinze - Report
The Premier League side are keeping tabs on the Argentine defender...
29 Mar 2009 17:29:57
Tottenham Hotspur are poised to make an offer for Real Madrid defender Gabriel Heinze in the summer, according to reports in the English press.
The 30-year old moved to the Bernabeu from Manchester United for £7 million in 2007 and has been a regular fixture in the left full-back position, firstly for Bernd Schuster and now under current coach Juande Ramos.
However, the Argentine international's contract expires in 2010 and Los Blancos are looking to cash in on him before he can leave for free, under the Bosman ruling.
English tabloid newspaper The People reports that Spurs are set to bid £4m to take him back to the Premier League, and that PSV Eindhoven are also thought to be tracking the player.
Heinze is currently said to be on a £60,000-week deal, an amount that falls within Tottenham's current wage structure, and the player may see a return to England as a fresh challenge.
Heinze has made 19 appearances for Real Madrid this season, scoring twice, and at international level he has played 50 times for Argentina, including participation at the 2006 World Cup.
Rafa Benitez had hoped to bring the player to Liverpool in 2007 but Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson was reluctant to let him move to a Premier League rival, thus opening the door for Heinze to follow David Beckham and Ruud van Nistelrooy out of Old Trafford and into the Bernabeu.

Personally I'm not 100% sure about him. I'd rather we get Taiwo for LB. Heinze is often considered to be the weak link in the Real Madrid side. I have no clue how he'll do here, but I think Taiwo would be a safer option.
COME ON YOU SPURS!!!
i always thought he was a good player havnt seen much spanish football so i cant comment on this season.he always had something about him and hes a right dirty player too so whats not to like.for 4 million i think hes a steal
He knows how to win games, giving us winning mentality.. Plus it will give basskadet his dream signing haha
wtf? Has someone been reading this forum again?
I would DEFINITELY take Heinze,. We were talking about whether or not Heinze would be a plausible target about a month ago on this site & I said I wanted him then. Hell I had him in my 09/10 starting XI! I'm starting to wonder how genuine these connections are or whether someone in the press farms forums for stories!

Problem with Taiwo is that he is fairly similar to BAE in that he gets caught out of position a lot. Kanu recently had a fairly public go at him to stop attacking & not dropping back. I would still like Taiwo but I would like Heinze also. We are so light squad wise in the LB berth & Taiwo would give us attacking options whilst Gabby would help shore us up.
Also, Heinze is a Premiership winner. That sort of experience is invaluable to a squad & very rare. Name me another player who would be available who has won the Prem? There aren't many. You need such players in your team if you really are serious about challenging at the top. Having youth & talent is pointless without the experience & know-how to guide them. I guarantee that having Taiwo & Heinze in the team together for just 1 season would make a Taiwo a much better allround player than if he was on his own & would mean that we have options right across the field.
We have to stop dismissing older players as 'passed it' just cos of their age. I like what Harry is doing. He's looking for champions to give our youth direction. I would have said Davids was passed it when he came but he was great for us & played a big part in winning us 5th place, even when he wasn't playing.

You will never find anyone with more passionate in their play than Gaby with his never say die attitude.
He loves and misses the Premiership and would be a great addition to the squad, a great motivator for the whole team!!!![]()
I completely agree Aly, & I have said for a while now that I think we would appeal to him. For a start, I would love to have an Argentine back in the team & he would fill a role we are SEVERELY lacking, experience at LB.
He can also fill in at CB when needed.
Just look at the respect Ronaldo used to give him while at Man U. I would love him to inspire that enthusiasm at Spurs.

plus he has the sharpest elbows in the buisness.ive never seen him come out second best to anyone in the nasty states topman
Stopped most top right midfielders in spanish teams, Real Madrid have the best left side in the Spanish league... Heinze and Robben, gotta be lucky to have them two work horses.
great left side thats why the bin dippers battered them
DarlingtonYid did I not mention when they play in the Spanish league? Or can you not read.
Yes, he certainly knows how to use those elbows....hahahaha,
and for someone who is only 5'10" he can jump so high!!! Did you see his how high he climbed against Almeria last weekend..... a great header from Sneijder's corner.... just cleared off the line! I was sure it was going to be his third goal of the season.
He is such a strong and positive personality in the dressing room.... all seem to get along with him and a wonderful team spirit. He is 31 very soon, but that isn't old for a defender..... Zanetti is still in the Argentine national team at 36 and doing well at Inter Milan! ..... so I think Gaby has many years left if he keeps fit, and as solid in the centre of defence, quite right Basskadet! And yes, Gaby and Cris Ro are very close friends with much professional respect which speaks volumes.
It seems with Liverpool's current form, no-one can match them at the moment! I think Real were outplayed tactically as well, you can't blame one defender for the whole team even if he made a silly mistake...... it was the rest of the team that didn't defend that free kick in the last moments!
