We are delighted to announce that agreement has been reached with Athletic Bilbao for the signing of Spanish youth international Yuri Berchiche.

The 17-year-old left-back has represented Spain at both U16 and U17 level and will now join up with our U18 Academy side, coached by Alex Inglethorpe.

"Yuri is a very good athlete with a great left foot," said Sporting Director Damien Comolli. "He is strong in the air and particularly suited to the English game because in Bilbao they possess a similar mentality.

"He is regarded as one of the best left-backs coming through in Spain and Yuri will be a very good signing for us. We have been following him for two seasons now and his signing will continue our strategy of strengthening at all levels of the playing side."

I would say we have him so that in a few years we will have another left back who knows his position well and how to play in the English league. Essentially so we don't end up in the same situation as last year again...

Or to push bale to left wing, since we seem unable to sign 1.

i've read in spanish forums that he's often compared to del horno, but they reckon he has some attitude problems

Got him on a free so it will not be to much of a risk, if he is like Del Horno he could be a very good future player
Mr Jol like big Sam is a very good man manager and seems to have a good effect of bad boy rep players
