Spurs chairman Daniel Levy and sporting director Damien Commoli are reportedly set to meet with Sporting this week to try and beat United to the highly-rated 20-year-old's signature.
The Portugese winger has been a target for United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, who believes he could develop into the next Cristiano Ronaldo.
And the two Premiership clubs are ready to fight out a £12million tug-of-war for his services.
Nani recently turned down a new Sporting deal, and told The Daily Mirror: "Sporting know my opinion about this subject. If an offer arrives which offers a good opportunity then I want to talk about it.
"Going to England is one of my options because the Premier League is one of the best leagues in the world and it will be a big challenge.
"But I have not spoken or made up my mind about any one club. I am prepared to go to England because I believe I would progress there."
sounds good to me although I've never seen him play

"Whilst I may not agree with your opinion, I'll defend to the death, your right to express it."
I can't see us getting him, although I could be wrong.
We only offered 12mil which I think is similar to the bid they turned down in january.
Add to that the fact that his mate Ronaldo plays for United who just won the league and I'd bet he'll be going to them.
"It's no use just winning, we've got to win well."
