It seems to compete with the big clubs, you have to do business like the big clubs. You might not agree with it but it seems that is the only way of doing business. I think everyone here is a little disappointed with how this transfer window has gone so far and it seems like it's not going to get any better.
We don't seem to be able to close out a deal for any kind of player worth signing. Yes we were great last season but Liverpool were also shit, as were Man City. There is no guarantee they will slip up like that this season. Yet they have signed Joe Cole, Yaya Toure and David Silva respectively. Yes money talks but there are still some very talented players out there who are interested in playing football too. We are not a poor club, we are just traditionally very savvy with our money.
We have to look at all the big clubs in world football and look at how they do business. Barcelona completed the signing of Mascherano this week and did it in a way that a lot of people would disagree with but they got their man. Fair enough they wanted Fabregas but didn't get him but everyone now knows where Cesc actually wants to be and most likely will be next summer. It was the same way Real Madrid got Cristiano Ronaldo last summer. But the Premier League clubs are also very guilty of these tactics too. Man Utd, did it to us with Carrick and then Berbatov. Liverpool did it to us to get Robbie Keane. Arsenal did it last summer to convince Chamahk to run his contract down so they could get him for free this summer. Chelsea did it to Ashley Cole and John Obi Mikel.
My point is, we are to respectful of other clubs and do things on their terms to much. This is the business side of football so we should make signings like a business and do everything in our power to get the players we want. It might not make us very many friends but they would not hesitate to do it to us. We should have been more forceful with our deals and convince the player of our ambitions. You won't all agree with it but if we want to be a "Big Club" we have to do business like a "Big Club".
I'm devastated
I know the window ain't shut yet but I cannot see us getting anything like what we need in the time that is left. I hate to sound like such a doom-monger and I usually like to stay positive, but this window has been a DISASTER. It is beginning to occur to me that we will never be as big as we all want us to be, not at this rate anyway, as we will never sign those 1 or 2 proper top players which we need.
It is possible that, with such a young squad, we might have some of these 'big' players already here at the club, who will one-day grow into such a player. However, I genuinely feel that they need a big name, established star to play alongside, someone who can mentor them & whom they can emulate, in order for these young talented players to really make that jump. The longer we take to bring in such a player, the longer it will take for our young players to step up as great players. I truly feel that partly what helped Hoddle become such a super-star was that he was able to mature alongside 2 World Cup winners in midfield. Had Ardiles & Villa not been at Spurs I'm not sure Hoddle would ever have become the great player we remember him as. Talented & with the potential, yes, but not great. That is something we have severely lacked for a long, long time.
There is also the point that, until we bring in such a player it will always be tough to hang onto our young guys. They want to play with the best & if they can't do that at Spurs, they will go somewhere where they can eventually. This was our BIG chance. We managed to acquire the carrot with which we could dangle outside the gates of White Hart Lane yet we've enticed no-one with it. That is a MEGA screw-up. The likes of Bale & Modric signed contract extensions early on to stay with us but they both will have expected us to bring in a couple quality players & I'm sure they'll be disappointed that we have not.
I know people will say how you don't want to "do a Leeds" but that is not what we're asking for. We don't want nor need 6 new great players on huge wages, just 1 or 2 on decent wages & we can protect ourselves with relegation clauses and the like. There is no need for anyone to "do a Leeds" - that is just scaremongering.
We did bring in Gallas which I do think will be good for our defence in this respect, but it is our forwards & midfielders that could really do with someone to look up to. Our eldest, most experienced midfielder right now is Jermaine Jenas and that, in my book, is not good enough has not been for some time. The fact that it has taken us so long to sort this out & we still have not managed to really bothers me.
We have 10 midfielders in our squad their combined age is only 240! That's an average age of just 24 (exactly 24, bizarrely)!!!
That's the same as Arsenal, whose midfield also has an average age of 24, yet they manager to have 2 29 year olds in their team as well as the likes of Fabregas who, despite being only 23, has an enormous amount of experience at every level. We simply do not have anything like that until we do we cannot improve to the levels we desire.

bass,
Bravo.
Just on that point I made at the end about Arsenal, they have a notoriously young team & 1 of their major criticisms is that they have no real experience, particularly in midfield. Well, they might be the ones who famously have a young midfield but I've just shown that ours is just as young & way more inexperienced. On top of that, they have a couple older heads who are both closer to the starting XI (Arshavin & Rosicky) than our 1 27 year old (Jenas). If this is something that Arsenal get strongly criticised over, something which apparently holds them back so much with people saying how they will never win anything until they correct this, how can we possibly be satisfied with our midfield?

I like to hang my hat on the experience we earned from our Carling Cup win but only Jenas, Lennon, and Huddlestone, from our current midfield, played in that game.
Part of our recent difference with Arsenal seems to be that they get their players at 20/1/2 while ours arrive at 27/8. I do see some choppy seas ahead for them once Fab leaves though.
YEAHH!!!!!! FEW MORE MONTHS WITH KEANE PAV DEFOE AND CROUCHY UP FRONT! TEAMS BETTER BE SH*TING THEMSELVES.
But in reality, our strike line compared to most is a joke. But if it got us into top four, it can do it again,
TOTTENHAM TILL I FOOKING DIE
Were a Jewish club so why are we surprised Spurs won't spend out big anymore, they have the riches of the CL but still waffle on about zero cash and loan deals.
Bollox to January that will be a bigger waste of time than this one with the likes of Jenas and Huddlestone stealing a wage from the club until they die.
Martin Jol On building his Spurs legacy: 'This is one of the biggest clubs in Europe and I want to be part of its history,'
I said in the Transfer thread that we are viewed as a small club by other teams, players and their agents.
We got used and tossed aside by Fabiano TWICE in the same manner in 2 years. Why the chairman allowed this to happen is fookin beyond me. I am astounded to think he was blagged by the same player in the same manner just 2 years apart.
We highlighted our targets and refused to do a deal until we eeked out every last bit of discount we could possibly get. We eventually ended up with absolutely fcuk all of what we wanted.
We will be tossed out of the top 4 and the Champions League due to our inability to behave like a club who deserves our seat at the top table. We are still trying to wheel and deal our way to the top table of football and the fact of the matter is that IT DOES NOT WORK. Its pathetic.
We had the opportunity to grasp this 4th spot and consolidate or build on it and push for honours and warrant our CL tag. We wont do that now.
We have let our closest rivals strengthen and they dont have the added pressure of CL getting in their way just a two bob Europa league competition they can show utter contempt as they will the FA and Carling cups in pursuit of our Champions League place in the league.
Get used to being an also ran until we can either drag our arses into this position again by yet again over achieving, or by us being under a totally different chairman and regime and us having bags of cash to spend and compete with the rest of the top half of the table.
I'd love to be made to eat my words but its not going to happen.
Yet again THFC on the verge of greatness and they manage to blow it in the most spectacular fashion.
Well done boys, some good rants up there. I'm not going to even bother just wanted to say I'm bitterly disappointed. What worse is they live Ina delusional world where we average player for high prices and expect other teams to do the same, which leaves us with players sitting around collecting cheques. Eg Hutton, Jenas, bentley, Keane. We need to cut our losses and move on. Were never going to see anywhere near the 9 we payed for Hutton or the 16 for bentley.

Comparing our strike force of Pav, Defoe, Keane, Crouch, and all things considered about how we do business I feel we have a great group of strikers. Also considering the fact that if Liverpool, or even Chelsea, Villa (who I dont see as challengers to us this season) get 1 of their strikers injured they are in some deep shit. The main thing we need to do that most of these clubs do if either find goals from our midfield or have our midfield create enough opportunities for our strikers to hopefully but the ball in the back of the net.

Time to start thinking about that big name striker who's contract is up in the summer...
Here is a website that shows players that contracts expire in 2011. Over the next few windows we may see some of them move because teams don't want to lose them on free or give them massive wage increases. Next summer I think Ochoa will be the hot commodity, Taye Taiwo is on that list fellas...
