Spurs ready to swoop in for £24million Mancini target Milner
By Aidan Magee, 24/07/2010
TOTTENHAM are ready to hijack Manchester City's £24million move for James Milner.
The midfielder is one of three players boss Harry Redknapp has targeted to drive his Champions League campaign.
He has already made a £20million bid for Aston Villa's Ashley Young and remains hopeful of bringing in Craig Bellamy from Manchester City.
Now Redknapp plans to step in if City's latest bid for Milner is turned down as City are adamant they will not make an increased third offer.
Redknapp is confident the lure of playing in Europe's elite competition could persuade Milner, 24, to come to London.
Spurs first offered £18m for Milner's Villa pal Young, 25, last summer but Villa valued him at £30m. But the winger is now keen on a move and chairman Randy Lerner has told manager Martin O'Neill he must sell before he can buy.
Redknapp, who has yet to make a signing this summer, could pick up Bellamy, 31, for £4m in the City firesale.
And he has also confirmed his interest in Brazilian striker Luis Fabiano, 29, as Sport of the World reported last month.
He said: "I like Fabiano, he is a top player. If he is available at the right price I would be interested."
Personally i dont think either will happen to be fair.

Harry: Spurs board must loosen the purse strings and not waste this chance
![]()
Harry Redknapp wants the Tottenham board to back his bid for glory - and not waste a golden opportunity to catapult the club into the elite.
After qualifying for the Champions League play-offs last season, expectations have risen at White Hart Lane.
And Redknapp is doing nothing to dampen them - claiming the north Londoners are ready to pull off another shock by winning the Premier League title.
He has been given a reported £40m to spend, but chairman Daniel Levy has made it clear he will not break his pay structure.
The Tottenham boss has identified three world-class players - but admits wages could be a stumbling block.
He said: “I think we need to bring in three real quality players that can push us on.
“This is a chance that Tottenham really shouldn’t waste. We have got ourselves into our best position since the Premier League first started, and we have to build on that.
“We now have to move forward and not take a step back and sit and look at what we’ve done.
“I feel it’s a great chance.
“This is a massive opportunity and we have got to grab it, to make sure we stay where we are.
“We have got to keep improving if we are going to stay there.
“I’m not saying that we necessarily need to spend fortunes, but we have to go and get two or three players who will make the difference to us.
“I have got three players in mind and if I can get these players we would be a different team.”
Targets are believed to be Brazil striker Luis Fabiano, Spanish star Raul, Milan’s Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Manchester City’s Craig Bellamy and Croatian goalkeeper Stipe Pletikosa.
He said: “I like Fabiano. He is a top player. If he was available at the right money then I would be interested in him, but whether that would be the right money for Tottenham Hotspur I don’t know.
“We won’t compete wage-wise with Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool.”
He’s still upset that Liverpool beat him to the signing of Joe Cole, a player he had mentored at West Ham.
Redknapp said: “A month ago when we first met with Joe he was dead keen to come to Tottenham and maybe it needed to be done before he had a chance to go and talk to anybody else.
“He wouldn’t do anything before the World Cup. In the end Daniel made him a really good offer, but I think by then he had made up his mind that he fancied going to Liverpool.
“He has got mates at Liverpool – Glen Johnson, Steven Gerrard – and in the end I think he thought moving out of London might be good for him.
“We want to get through the Champions League, to have a run in that. That’s a far cry from when I first came here and the priority was staying in the league.
“The players now believe in themselves.
“I got them playing in the right positions.
“There was no magic formula really. I gave them a bit of confidence and picked the right players and I got the right blend
Thoughts?

How about Bentley, Jeynas and Keane for Milner and Young? We would even throw Hutton in to sweeten the deal!
dont think we need either milner or young, as we will be paying over the top for both as they are english.
In a world full of City's and United's...there is only one Hotspur
I don't rate Milner as high as most so I would hate a move for him. It's ridiculous when you consider that Villa want 30 mil for him when David Villa just went for 34 mil. The inflated cost of English players is horrible and for someone as thoroughly decent as Milner, a big bid would make no sense to me. I rate Ashley Young higher than Milner, but the same inflated price for English players remains. I wouldn't pay more than 20 mil for him. Bagging him would be nice because it would give us pace on the wing and allow Modric to play centrally in a 4-5-1 more often with Bale at Arrys preferred LB position, but a winger is not the priority. Spending over 25 mil, which it would likely take for Milner, on anything but a top-class striker seems silly to me right now.
he is not as good as silva but he is a proven talent and he is very good. definitely a majo improvement from jenas and more dynamic. also young is an ace player we would definitely have a terrific chance at the champions league again with both of them in the squad
Ashley Young didn't do much last season to warrant a £20 mil. price tag. Similarly, Milner is not worth £24 mil. We're better off signing only Craig Bellamy at £3mil.
I think we don't want Milner. We are probably just using him to force city to stop looking at some other player...I hope Dzeko ^^
panem et circenses
I wouldn't mind abit of Young seeing as he is linked with teams like Barca and Real apparently.. Him and Lennon on both sides then Bale as a left back would be unstopable, Lennon is prolly better at running at people but Young has a better end product and can score some great goals and he would have a great chance of being our free kick taker, I've seen him score some great goals from free kicks, so I would take Young 20M and I don't think we really need Milner? But if we do buy him it has to be about 15M.
milner - no
young - definitely
then, 4-5-1 looking like this:
................gomes...................
charlie..king.....dawz......bale..
......T-Hudd......Big-Willy.........
Azza.......Modders.......Young..
.............defoe/signing.........
I can not see milner going anywhere bar man city.He is another lescott looking to move from what was a bigger club than man city 2 years ago to join the big wage boys.He would never join man city in a million years if it wasn't for the wages on offer, another greedy disloyal twat.
would welcome either deal. but rather have fabiano
I'm with Drago, I don't think we need Milner and probably wouldn't get the chance anyway - If Man City want him there's only one place he's going to go.
As for Young - we have to sign him, love this player but would mean dropping Bale back to LB which as we know isen't his best position. Bit of a dilemma?
Milner isn't worth £24m. No way. I'd say that Villa know that City are interested, and based on the silly money that they've been throwing around, Villa are asking for silly money.
I mean, thats £24m for someone who isn't going to be a guarenteed starter, and he'll probably ask for a fair wack of wages too.
Young would be good, but again, I honestly don't think he's worth £30m.
On the subject of our wage structure. We have Levy's excellent business sense to thank for how well our club is being run, but I really think that now we've broken down that top 4 barrier, we should be raising our wage budgets.
