Dave Allen used to smoke a cigar and have a glass of whiskey when he first started out , people used to stay home to watch him instead of going to the pub . After years of success he seemed to drop off the radar as the newcomers to comedy were seen as the new era . To name a few
Blackadder
The young ones
French and saunders
and many more
He rejuvenated his carreer , he had quit smoking and drinking but he could never recapture his audience as he had before because there were far more channels available to the viewing public with the introduction of sky .
A bit of his early magic = he was totally original at this time of his carreer

I was fortunate to see him live, the guy was a genius, fantastic dry humour with a wondeful "Twinkle" in his eye.

absolute genius and a good paddy too.his half missing finger used to freak me out when i was a kid,but my whole family used to sit around pissing ourselves at the stuff he came up with.
