      Good morning Yiddos,

Just wondering if anyone's gone to Oz for a working holiday or summat similar?

I woke up yesterday, fed up to my neck of not being able to get a job, waking up every morning to the shite weather out side and decided, I fancy a few months in Australia. Sooooooo, anyone ever done it or similar? Any advice? What sort of work did you do over there? Did you do it on your own back or go through some sort of agency/company/I dunno . . . .

      Cheerrrrrrrrrrrrrs.

A couple of my friends did something similar just off their own back, and where able to get plenty of bar work and loved it. They did have to save loads of cash to go though, flights ain't cheap, and they needed a bit of cash to get by on until they could get some work. Think they had periods where they didn't work for a few weeks then periods where they got temp bar work just to keep the cash flow going. They said it was great an experience of a lifetime but OZ ain't cheap. Hope it works out for ya fella as I've no doubt you'll love it.

My mate done a year out there and had to raise ridiculous money for flights, spending money, visa conditions etc although I couldn't tell you the specific requirements.

He also got pulled into an interview room and questioned like on those airport shows on Bravo (Bravo - showing my age).

But don't let that put you off! I'd say getting the money sorted will be your main obstacle. If you're just looking to go on holiday & not work though I'd say you'd need a higher amount of cash as they'd want to see how you're planning on supporting yourself out there. Last thing you need is a 24 hour flight and get denied entry at the border cos of a lack of reddies.

Finally, my mate did a lot of reseach like checking out the websites & forums for the people who travel/emigrate/work out there, got in touch with embassies etc etc. I'm sure you've already thought of it but definitely worth a mention.

I don't know if your heart is set on OZ but if not there are cheaper alternatives especially in Asia, Thailand being very popular these days. You can find work as an english teacher out there relatively easily from what I have been told people I know who have spent loads of time there. May be a cheaper alternative for you and could be a great to experience a culture that is very different to our own.

      Spot on!

If you are definitely going to Australia though try and fly through Singapore and visit here for a few days, you'd love it

First off all i can say is if ur unemployed.. do it!!!!!!

Im now back home just over a year after a year in australia and the world cup in bali. The place is amazing! The women are fooking fantastic and obviously the weather is great.

In terms of going just sort yourself out with the required documentation its cheaper and they tend to add things in which you really dont need. Use the aussie government website for your work visa. It takes 5 mins to fill out. And you get your visa in no time. You will also need a tax file number. Either wait till you get there or again you can do it online. Easy to get a bank account over there really quick compared to here so id just wait to do that.

Flight wise try to use a foreign airline like air asia. They are cheap and there service is great. Doesnt really matter where u land half way through unless u want to visit. I landed in hong kong on the way over. Way back i landed in singapore and quala lumpa.

Work wise. Have a look on aussie gumtree for work before you go. Give you some ideas. Aussies love travellers working for them as they no u'll put in the effort as you are clearly gonna need the dough!

Some ideas. If you can get seasonal work on grain you will earn a small fortune! East coast is this time of year. West coast starts around october. The main company that hires is called cbh and they pay about 26 dollars an hour and its a gift.

If you have the sort of education to be useful on the mines again the money to be earned is amasing but the hours are crazy!

Emmm what else. A big company called harry the hirer does a flat out hiring scheme a month before the grand prix in melbourne. They need a tonne of people to build the marquees for the races and also the big melbourne flower show is the same week. They prob hire a couple hundred travellers.

      What i did

Landed in perth.. worked grain. I already sorted the job before i went. 3 and half months earned 17 thousand dollars.

Travelled the east coast having loadsa sex lol from brisbane to cairns. Didnt work on the way up but if you do want to there is loads of fruit picking depending on the time of year!

Flew to melbourne. Worked the flower show as the lead guy on the site liked me and it wasnt a strict as the grand prix. He gave ma a truck and all i had to do was put up the walls on the marquees. Gift.

Moved to sydney after as i didnt like melbourne that mcuh. Got a job building custom armour packages for cars.

Then went to bali for the world cup.

You have to do a certain amount of hours harvest work to get a second year. So worth doing.

Right so im real hungover and dont remeber what all ive wrote so if you want any other questions answered fire away.

just read through some of the other comments so thought id add a couple of bits.

first i think @Yidington mate was unlucky. australia isnt very strict on entry (like say the states) as long as you dont have a major conviction. my friend actually had a minor conviction under his name and it never got touched on. money wise. as your from the uk money shouldnt be much of a concern. people always say you need a certain amount in your bank but thats more for poorer travelling countries i believe but if you want the figure i heard it was £1200 or something. i found entry to australia very easy. as long as your visa is correct and accounted for it is a very smooth entrance into the country. you do need to make sure its all correct though. i had to change a circumstance on mine and it was all handled very quickly.

flights. i had a minor emergency and had to get home quite quickly and i managed to russell up flights home for around £600

this is how crazy it was
long flight to quala lumpar was about 150 quid from bali
long haul to heatrow from singapore was £300
1 hour flight from heatrow to belfast £170!!!!!!!!

also finally the bar work statement. obviously anyone can do bar work but you need to watch this one as you actually have to complete a course to serve at a bar. a couple of states my friend and i found a little cheat. which was to do a refrsher course for free online and get a certifcate that way but it only works in some states. i think NSW is quite strict on it.

tbh though with work you want to think of it this way. either you want it to be seasonal so it only lasts a few months. you earn the money travel. earn money travel or you want to pick a job no aussie in the right mind would want to do forever lol. for instance. i was with a couple of lads in sydney who did tarmacing . they earned loads because apparently the aussies wouldnt go near the job.. hot weather + hot tarmac. not nice work but well paid and your only gonna have to do it for a month or 2.

also with the laid back lifestyle of australia (this doesnt go for everyone obviously) but i worked a few jobs where employers wanted to hire us more thn australians due to the work ethic.

      money over there.

beer scares the shit outta ya when you buy a box. aussie cheap drink of choice is goon (boxes of wine) compared to us which is cider obviously. most i paid for a pint of magners when i had the urge $13.50.. least i paid $5.. aussies dont really use pints. they use a scooner.. not quite a pint. something to do with pints getting warm by the end. not when u drink em as fast as me lol.

food when shopping for yourself is a little dearer than here but you wont notcie it to bad just shopping for yourself.

      hostels

anywhere from $17 to 30 dollars a night depending on location.
cinema and stuff like that can be expensive.

you earn the extra money to compensate for slightly higher prices though.

gonna chuck in a negative and say dont expect a cruisy ride there may be ups and downs but on a whole its well worth it. if you put in the effort getting a job is a hundred time easier than getting one ehere.

and done its time to head out for the match o also if you want to check out some cool picks to finally set you on your way you can add me on facebook if you like,

Glen Johnston. profile pic im standing at the end of a yacht giving a sailor pose lol.

      Glen.

      Cheers for that Glen.

I've done a lot more research into it, doesn't look like something you can just do.

Hoping to save some dollar over the next 12 months and head off start of next year when the weather starts getting depressing again next winter!

I know the exact feeling mate. Wake up, shite weather, check the job sites...fook all....sit and watch all those property programs where people move to aus and then start wishing you were there!

Doesn't help that 2 of my best mates are going travelling round the world for 2 years, spending 6 months in Aus on the way!

Couldn't tell you about the work or w.e though

My best mate and his missus have recently returned from 18months away. He was lucky he's a cop and the force held his job as a traffic cop open for when he returned. She had to quit her job.

But what they did was became diving instructors. They toured Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and the NSW coatline of Oz. The money they made as instructors paid for hotels, hostels, food, drink etc.

And there's quite a lot of people from the UK and Europe doing exactly the same.

@Glenjamin amazing to see the difference between two people's takes on a scenario. My mate, even to this day, talks about it like it was trying to make it across Middle Earth to Mordor & that the security & requirements were intense.

When did you go? If you don't mind me asking? Perhaps security & requirements have been relaxed/increased since the earlier of the two visits?

Go where you like as long as they don't have Internet access for you I'll be happy lol, joking aside mate do it while your young or you will regret it. I worked all over the states at your age( well I am Irish your meant to like lol)and it was the best thing I ever done. I have 3 mates working in oz at the moment, they uplifted their families and moved there because they simplify had no work in this kip all 3 had a trade though and they're screaming for them over there, the 3 of them are working in a mine over there 3 weeks on 2 weeks off really hard work but the money is unreal, all 3 said they would never come back to Ireland , I think the min here you have to have in your bank account is 3 grand figure might be a little off

@Yidington - i left in october 2009. it really was just like going on holiday lol. they just checked my visa through a computer and off i went. i even had a knife/multi tool thingy in my bag mwaahaha!

@contrast - yeah mate obviously money is the biggest part of it all. i was lucky in the sense that i left uni in the heart of the recession and i got a bit down about doing all that work through uni and getting fook all from it. my mum paid for my flight and i sold my car and left 3 months later if even that long. the actually process to go there is very rapid. i sent off for my visa and had one 6 hours later..

In your case if you dont mind me sorting your plan out lol would be to save your arse off until october. phone the harvest companies in and around perth. most the big ones work around an area about 3 hours south of perth and sort yourself a job for 3 months. the money is amazing.. if you want a better reason than money alot of gorgeous girls from perth head down that time of year to work th harvests in the complexes sorting and testing grain. so easy to pull.

or else if thats to soon as i said in the previous post phone harry the hirer a couple of months before the grand prix tell them your coming over and get yourself into the group interview. they hire pretty much everyone as long as your built enough for some decent labour work.

as i said before anything you want to know give me a shout.

My son works in Oz as an exploration geologist and is earning a fortune. The mining companies are desperate for staff to work in the outback. if you've any form of qualification in engineering or geology, the mines are the place to work.

He went out on a tourist working visa, but now has a permanent one.

We're going out there in August, stopping over in Singapore. Any recommendations on where to visit?
