Just lost the 1st test to South Africa but a good display nearly brought them back but fell short 26 - 21. Not too sure why there is a 'Lions' team, why can't England or Ireland just go over there?

It is a combination team all the home nations. Thus it's name The British and Irish Lions.
Yes, they played well in the latter stages of the game, but to be fair this was after the Boks had made many substitutions.
The Lions were pulled to pieces in the scrums and were unable secure possession at the breakdowns, especially in the 1st half. Add to that they could not controll the lineouts either. (A Bok strength I might add)
They also seemed to battle with some of the interpetions from the ref as well. Which often happens when you have a Southern hemisphere ref.
Plus the Lions didn't take advantage of the 3 kicks they had at the posts., which if landed would have secured them a win.
The Lions played very well in the 2nd half and had the majority of the possession, but let themselves down a few times with infringements at the breakdown at critical periods, these cost them dearly, as often they were in good attacking positions and the Boks were let off the hook.
But, The Boks were very happy to hear the final whistle, as by then they were under severe pressure. Good game. On another day had some of the decisions been interpreted differently, The Lions would have won.
