Fifa have been experimenting with using 5 referees in matches involving Brazilian matches.
There would be the usual 3 plus an extra one used in each half on the field of play.
Is this a progression? Would it for instance have helped in say Manu/Spurs dodgy penalty decision. Webb was quite some way from where the incident took place in Spurs penalty area, another pair of eyes closer to the scene may well not have given that decision.
Alternatively the assistant referees, instead of just patrolling the lines could be roaming in their half of the field, as long as they are in line with the last defender.
Often all sorts of things are happening off the ball, whilst the ref is racing towards where the action is taking place.
It is often very difficult for a referee to be up with play all the time, especially when a goalkeeper hoofs it up into the oppositions half, say from a corner.
I like the idea of 5 refs for professional football but not for amateur, as i believe it would be difficult to get 5 officials for each match in amateur football......... your thoughts?
sounds good but the refs still proberly go wth the manc w--ks
Why have 5 refs and no video?
It'd make sense to have video refs more I reckon.
Also why not just have 2 refs 1 for each half?

Oh so you are saying do away with linesmen!!!
They cant get it right when standing oposite the last man let alone being in the field of play!!!
Crap idea. Leave lino's on the line and leave 1 man in the middle to make the decisions for us all to talk about.
Forgive my ignorance but arnt the Linesmen now assistant referees.
They should be used for more than just off sides as their job description states.
If it is a big decision it should be blown or flagged by the ref/assistant ref and then in consultation with his assistanst the ref should make a decision based on the views of all 3/4 officials.
I think the first step in erradicating refereeing mistakes is to get the assistant referees more involved in decision making if they genuinely have abetter view of an incident.
Yes, I also agree withassistant refs being more involved (Which they are not at present) At present assistant refs are what they were before...........LINESMEN...............with a different title! It doesn't appear to have changed the fact that they have little say in decisions made by refs.
