Jermaine Jenas has accused Howard Webb of 'crumbling' after the referee’s controversial penalty award in Manchester United’s victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
In an unrestrained, though contradictory, attack on the official, the Spurs midfielder claimed that Webb was intent on giving United a way back into the game after the champions found themselves trailing 2-0 at the interval.
Webb awarded United a penalty in the 58th minute for a foul on Michael Carrick, despite a legitimate challenge from Heurelho Gomes.
The decision has been portrayed in many sections of the media as handing the title to Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.
“It was a prime example of a referee crumbling under pressure at Old Trafford,” said Jenas.
“The atmosphere, the occasion, the importance of the match, a lot of factors take their toll when making decisions.
“One thing which struck me about it was that he didn’t even think. It was like he’d already made his mind up when he came out for the second half that he was going to give something.”
Jenas claims that United’s season was on the point of ruin, despite the fact that, even had they lost, The Red Devils would still have been level on points with Liverpool with a game in hand on their rivals.
“This is a team today whose season was nearly in ruins,” Jenas said. “It was a very important moment in the season in terms of the title, but more often than not, these decisions go this way. It’s just something that happens and it’s part of football.”

there is no doubt that webb got this terribly wrong and he effectively handed utd the title , i believe this is the reason the team folded the way they did !!! if webb can make such a decision when you can clearly see gomez getting the ball then its very difficult to keep your spirits up .
"The great fallacy is that the game is first and foremost about winning. It's nothing of the kind. The game is about glory. It's about doing things in style, with a flourish, about going out and beating the other lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom."

Jeans is spot on. All you ask from a referee is that he needs to be sure when making a crucial decision like the one on the weekend. If he wasn't sure, then he can't give it. What we saw on the weekend was a referee who was influenced by the crowd and this is not acceptable at this level of football.
typical jenas, laying the blame at somone elses feet, completely gutless as always. this penalty stuffs gettin a bit sickly now, what about how the players "crumbled", we still had 11 on the pitch like them, but we allowed them to score 4 more goals without reply. we gave up so easily, thats something that really needs adressing, weve got a losers attitude.

I agree with the sentiments of JJ but he has to take some of the blame as he and his team-mates also crumbled.
We need to forget about this and not let it ruin our season.
If it keeps rumbling on like this we will not have the focus on our next game and go into that still whinging about a poor refereeing decision when we should be looking for an improved team performance from that second half.
We still have the chance of getting into Europe again and need to focus on getting there and not about the past.
Good Afternoon, If Webb had his eyes open early on, we
would probably have been down to ten...

if it was a team other than Man Utd (who are THE BEST CLUB IN THE WORLD...unfortunate fact fellas!) - then yes, we should be roasting the players for allowing a 2-1 LEAD SLIP to an ultimate 5-2 LOSS.
However - we were after half time facing an alomst £100 MILLION worth (in todays footballing terms) of attacking talent - i.e. Rooney, Tevez, Berbatov and Ronaldo (ITS A HANDFUL JUST DEALING WITH ONE!)
Note: before the penalty - there were 10 mins were you could smell a potential goal from them - merely b'cos of the changes (why? - take nani off N PUT ROONEY OUT WIDE who is like a pitbull..then you put another pitbull on steroids in Tevez...take fletcher off - n put the the ginger bastard Scholes - who although a kant is a sublime player) - It's easy to see second half we faced a very different team.
Now...this Utd team will undoubtedly HAVE be much much harder to contain - (and without the dubious gift of a penalty) we could have either won the game 3-2..or possibly lost 3-2 (or a draw).
But the 5-2 LOSS was merely a result of us trying to conatin a wealth of attacking talent who then get helped by a referre early on ..n naturally they smelt blood...n the damn burst!
Put simply...once a shark smells blood - it's a lot harder to swim with them.
Also note: in all honesty - i don't think the 'fight' was there on our players cos we had nothing to REALLY fight for. We are safe - n losing this game does not fcuk up anything - plus Europe is a bonus <which can still be attained even if we lost this game>. N to play against 12 WITH NO MOTIVATION CAN BE DRAINING
Now Man Utds predicament is different - they needed this win more than us - and WITH AN 'EXTRA MAN' ON THEIR SIDE- giving them the 'blood' to feed on...it was always gonna be game over.
sO, IN SUMMARY - THE PENALTY DID CHANGE THE GAME - N LED TO BIGGER IMPLICATIONS
Agree 100% with Jenas:
"One thing which struck me about it was that he didn’t even think. It was like he’d already made his mind up when he came out for the second half that he was going to give something.”
How can the dumb ****a not even think - considering his position in the field???????!!!!!
n more importantly - if it was a penalty - then Gomez should have been sent off?..no?..<as he was last man?>
webb is A KANT!
Slim how/where do you get these little clips from mate?
You make em some how?
Part of me wishes he'd have caught him bollok height!!! Other part thinks "No thats wrong and we need him for the run in"
jus out of curiosity - did Carrick appeal for the penalty???????
This just sums up what a complete tosser Jenas really is, theres nothing like deflecting his and the other ten Spurs player piss poor second half performances!
I hope Harry sells this pretender in the summer hes nothing but a leach since singing from the circus in the north east!
I blame the Spurs players for that defeat no one else absolute disagace they take no share in the blame of conceeding 5 effing goals in 45 mins!
Seajay mate it makes not a difference if he caught ronaldo or not WTF was Palacios doing litterally flying through the air like a moron, if the Ref wasnt so god damn inconsistent then he would have sent him off for intent to injure!
Too many excuses for a second half that was embarassing!
F*ck Stratford!!!!
