Jermain Defoe's brother is on a life-support machine tonight after being attacked in broad daylight in east London, The Times has learnt.

The 26-year-old is at a central London hospital after suffering serious head injuries following an attack in Leytonstone on Monday.

He was taken to an east London hospital but later transferred to the location where he remains. Newham CID, investigating the attack, do not think a weapon was used.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "We were called to an east London address on Monday, April 20, 2009, to reports of a man suffering head injuries following an assault.

"The victim, a man aged 26, was attacked in Walnut Gardens, on the junction with High Road, Leytonstone, E15, by unknown suspect or suspects, between 1615 and 1700.

"He has since been transferred to a central London hospital where his condition is described as life-threatening."

Hopes he makes a full recovery

sickening ****.....i wont comment on it too much cause i dont know exactly wat happened but there is no need for any kinda attack like this...hope he recovers fully....as for defoe tommorrow....sometimes players see this as a chance to give a loved one something to live for.....i think if harry told him he could start tommorrow he would take that chance and dedicate the 94th minute winner to his bro!

      Sad news indeed.

      He was a MC/Rapper.

Not good news at all, and hope he is able to recover, and if Berbs is right then thoughts are with the family.

Doubt our Defoe would play the day after a tragic event like this, and if he does its a very brave effort. I certainly wouldnt be.

      A glimmer of hope?

I cant seem to find anything other than rumours on forums concerning Gavins death.

No major news sources are confirming his demise, hopefully that means he is hanging on in there.

I hope this is the case.

Kind of puts everything into perspective. Terrible news. Such a waste of a young life.
