I hear a lot of 'we paid too much for so & so' or 'he is not worth that amount'. The problem is that recent transfer fees have sky-rocketed due to several over-inflated transfers in the past which now serve as a benchmark for other clubs. We all heard how enit wanted £20m for Arshavin because we'd got a similar amount for Keane. Its that sort of thing that makes the price for players look over the top & the news on City's bod for Kaka will only make things worse.
Any inform player that is a star at his current club will cost upwards of £10m. It sounds ridiculous to us but it is a result of the uge amounts of money that is available in the Premier League & reflects the value for such clubs to stay in the top flight.
Even despite the credit crunch you can expect such fees to increase further in the next few years & quality players who we can grab now for £15m may well be worth more than £20m in year or 2 whatever happens. Its just the way things are these days.

Will we stay or will we go now?
Will we stay or will we go now?
If we go there will be trouble
and if we stay we'll do the double
So Levy has got let us know
Will we stay or will we go!

I think this will only really apply to clubs who:
1. Have a multi-billionaire benefactor
2. Have a substantial cash reserve
Those clubs that have to borrow from banks will feel the pinch. I just can't see how a football club will somehow be insulated from the lack of availability of cash should they have to borrow from the banks.
Why?
What makes them different from any other business?
Problem with this argument, I suppose, is the wealth of TV money that comes into the Premier League these days - and I suppose is guaranteed for however many years - keeps them able to spend.
Come the next round of TV contracts, one would wonder whether the likes of Sky or ESPN or whoever, will be able to stump up similar amounts of cash. A lot would depend on whether the banks loosen their purse strings by that stage.
Slightly bumbling post as I'm half trying to pay attention to some daft conference call that I'm currently sitting on.
lol.
I kind of agree with you about the rest of what you are saying but I also think that it is just the way of the game at the moment that things will just continue to get more expensive. TV rights & Sponsorships will always bring in money and bigger grounds & inflated ticket prices will mean that income will only get more as long as we keep high attendances.
However, you are right in that the banks will lower the amounts they will lend & low interest rates will effect thnds too in all likelihood. However, transfers will always be directly compared. As long as 1 club can charge a certain amount for a player then another club will want the same for a similar type of player. As long as clubs are buying, the price will continue to rise.

Slightly off topic but it is a bit ironic to see that Ashley Young (a player who if I recall correctly we pulled out of the race to sign from Watford 2 years ago because he was deemed overpriced at 11m) has just been awarded with his 3rd premiership player of the month award as we prepare to part with £14m for Wilson Palacios. I'd give my left bo!!ock for Ashley Young right now.
