Jermain Defoe’s £9million move from Spurs to Portsmouth is being probed by City of London police.
Football Association chiefs are also investigating the deal for the England striker which went through on deadline day last January. Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp signed Defoe while still in charge of Portsmouth.
City of London Police refused to comment yesterday but Mirror Sport can reveal that they have spoken to key players in the deal.
FA chiefs have also looked at the transfer. Their Quest enquiry is aimed at investigating illegal payments in transfer deals.
The Defoe move is also at the centre of a £1.5million legal dispute between football agent Sky Andrew and the England striker.
Defoe insists he negotiated the deal that took him to Fratton Park himself after dispensing with the services of Andrew.
Andrew has taken the case to a legal tribunal which has been heard in London this week .
Defoe spent two days at the hearing which centres around the alleged involvement of another agent, Mitchell Thomas, in the transfer.
Cherie Blair, the barrister wife of former Prime Minister Tony Blair, has sat on the three-person panel at the hearing.
