Harry Redknapp has called for lifelong bans to be given out to any fans found guilty of this 'cowardly' act. He himself was targeted by a coin-thrower at Aston Villa this season but it has been an increasing problem & has come to a head recently.
Many people are sympathizing with Drogba for he will be punished far harsher for his reaction than the fan who provoked it. However, as I was watching the video of that particular incident I actually spotted a coin as it hit the floor. Looking back more closely I think i counted 3 coins as well as the one that Drogba threw back & I wonder how many more were thrown that weren't picked up by the cameras. This is obviously more than a coin every so often. Possibly even more than a coin a game. How many times do coins get thrown that nobody ever notices? I'd wager it happens quite a lot.
I entirely agree with Harry & think this current trend completely pathetic. Whatever we think of opposing players/managers & referees they are out there providing us with an entertainment that we all love. By causing them physical injury it will only mean, eventually that games will be stopped for safety reasons. Sooner or later someone will lose an eye & there career would be ruined for life. Imagine if it were somebody like Ronaldo. I hate him but he's a wonderful footballer. Worse still, if it can happen to the opposition then it can to our players also.
This is something that really needs to stop in my opinion. I would never ordinarily contemplate 'snitching' or 'grassing' on somebody but these idiots are going to ruin this beautiful game for all of us & we can do something to stop them. So, in this exception, I fully believe that we have a duty to report anyone we see throwing anything toward the pitch & having them removed. Better yet, we just follow them out the stadium & give 'em a damn good hiding!
Let's make sure that this stupidity absolutely, 100% never ever happens on hallowed turf at White Hart Lane!

What are people thinking throwing coins, don't they know there is a credit crunch!!
Sorry, just looking for a cheap laugh there. On a serious note, it really is dangerous and I can understand Drogbas' reaction, although his actions could only really be justified if he was certain that the person he threw it back at was the idiot who threw it in the first place.
Its so cowardly and wrong to throw coins, Shameful behaviour no matter who its thrown at. The sad thing is the low life probley got an massive sense of achievment. Someone should shop him to the old bill.
On another note, Drogba should be heavily fined and banned as the coin could have hit a woman or a little child and that type of retaliation is not acceptable.
pity drogba threw the coin back the fan who commited offence will actually be rewaded when he gets punished.
Drogba shoud have put it in his sock, stuck his thumbs up and said thanks!!!
Like he aint got enough dough!!!
Seriously though the tw4t that threw it should face criminal charges for assault as he would if he was in the street and did that.
Being at or playing football does not excuse this or any other type of action. I also believe Drogba should be dealt with in exactly the same way but he would have provocation on his side to an extent. However as a role model for kids he shold know better. Immagine if youd have been in the crowd enjoying the match with ya littlun and it'd hit them in the face. I know I'd have run down there jumped the barier and been pleeding the same provocation case as him when I slapped seven shades of sh1t out of him live on TV.
The guy should get a huge fine from the FA and his club and a long ban.
The tit that started it should be banned for life.
1. coin throws should get life ban
2. footballers sticking up fingers or throwing coins should get season bans (it should be on par with the treatment the fans get)
3. if you can hit a target with a coin from anything other than the front row.... GOOD SHOT. Wow, thats a real skill.
It is a reflection of the lack of respect in modern day society and the lack of any consequences for peoples actions.
In all honesty its a complete bag of bollox.
20 years ago if someone would have chucked somthing onto the pitch at a player or official they would have got weighed in by the people standing next to them.
I'd like to suggest that if anyone in the terraces sees a knobber throwing things onto the pitch that you either
A) (See above)
B) Inform an official so they can be dealt with.
I remember back in the early 80's Chelski and Spammers comming to WHL throwing 50p coins that had been sharpened. It's been going on for years.
Anybody who throws lumps of metal at anyone for a reason like 'football' wants to seriously evaluate their sad existence.
with the amount of cameras in the country you would think that these things can be picked up upon ? trouble makers are easy to spot , there is not enough being done to identify and punish these scumbags .
i believe drogbas reaction was lunacy and he deserves everything he gets , could you imagine being in that crowd and him hitting your child ? or missis ?
"The great fallacy is that the game is first and foremost about winning. It's nothing of the kind. The game is about glory. It's about doing things in style, with a flourish, about going out and beating the other lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom."

Three match ban for Drogba. Just announced.
No action against the fan/s who threw the coin/s as far as I can make out.
