I wouldn't worry too much about it. Even now at WHL they have mics hanging from the rafters in order to amplify crowd noise, so they are aware of it. Reading the plans it sounds like they have been considering every last little detail.
Anyway, regardless, I am a sound engineer & I can tell you that it is very difficult to get 60000 people sitting in an enclosed space, with a roof, & not be able to hear them!

A stadium is a completely different kettle of fish to an Opera house or Concert hall. The materials used & such will have little effect within a stadium because you have crowds of people sat on all sides with a semi-open roof.
When you design a concert hall you have a sound coming from a particular position, the stage, that you want to not only make as big as possible but sound as sweet as possible to every audience member, no matter where they sit in the auditorium. You do this by utilizing reverberation and, in some cases, cleverly placed speakers, etc. A piece of music is heavily effected by the design of a room, where bass can get trapped in corners or dead spot created when two exact opposite soundwaves are reflected back at each other & cancel each other out. Every room has its own 'sound' that it adds to any noise created within it. That sound can either musically sweeten a noise & give it warmth or it can equally deaden it. In a concert hall it is very important that the room itself adds its own character to the music so that it creates an extra element to the experience had visiting to that particular venue.
A stadium is different in that you have the audience all around the outside, focusing all the noise into the middle of the pitch. The thing that really effects the noise level is the roof over the crowd that helps contain the noise levels. You won't get the same sort of reverberation & you don't really need it in a stadium as the quality of the sound is irrelevant. The thing that really makes a difference is the crowd itself. An entire crowd all singing the same song in unison will be virtually double the amplidfication than an entire crowd all singing different things out of sync as that is far more likely to create phase issues. There are certain little tricks that could be done but you are depending on over 60000 different variables in a stadium as opposed to just the one on stage in a music venue. However, designing it in an oval shape is much better for the sound than the traditional rectangular shape that we currently have at WHL.
However, all that really matters is the level of noise & 60000 fans sat in a big circle all shouting towards the centre is difficult to keep quiet! In any case, already at WHL they suspend microphones from the rafters over the crowd's heads which not only provides an ambience for the commentary on television but is also amplified thru the stadium's PA system to increase noise levels.
I really would not worry about it too much. It is something they will be discussing anyway but regardless, it will not be a noise-killer whatever they do!
Finally, we've got some of the best designers in the business working on our new stadium & they have experience of stadiums before. These aren't just poncey architects. Their projects include Leeds United new Elland Road construction, Brighton & Hoves beautiful new stadium design, the amazing Haifa Sports Complex, The Estadio Municipal in Coimbra, Portugal, which was the one of the Euro 2004 venues.

After paying 150% ticket prices for many years I want 150% spent on the one thing I enjoy....my only true connection with the match....the only difference I can make to the result is to sing me lungs out.
I want nothing less than the best experts in the field of acoustics to give us a sound to envy ......
Cheers again bass

DONE
(See bellow)
To whom it may concern.
I write you this letter as a concerned fan of the greatest football club in the world.
I would like the opportunity to air some views on our new stadium development.
The New Library (Emirates Stadium) frequented by our rivals is a truly wonderful looking piece of architecture but somewhat lacks the ambiance to provide a team with the 12th man that every top team needs.
One thing that separates us from the Woolwich Wanderers (Arsenal) is the fanatical nature of our supporters and the hugh noise we manage to generate home or away.
We currently have a wonderful stadium that we rock to its foundations week in and out and we must be afforded the same privilege at our new home.
This small detail could be the difference between having a nice new stadium and having a fortress.
It would be appreciated by myself if you could take this important piece the puzzle into consideration when designing our future home.
If you could also see your way to sticking the word "Lane" in the new name for the ground and making it as striking as the Allianz Arena it would also be very much appreciated.
Yours sincerely

not to worry you all but the structural engineers responsible for the actual functional design are none other than Buro Happold, the same responsible for the Emirates!
Don't worry tho, Gooners don't know how to cheer on their team whereas us Yids won't have any problem creating a good atmosphere in the new place!

Thinking about it a little more, it possibly makes a difference the steeper the stands are. That is the only thing I can think of that might effect the sound.
If you remove the crowd element & instead picture a speaker sitting in each seat going up thru the stands , all of them playing the same song, the further back you go the louder it needs to be to be heard at the front. Therefore a stadium with very steep stands will not only create a louder noise but will also reflect the noise coming from the opposite stand quicker & better. However, a crowd being such an unpredictable thing with so many variables it is very difficult to predict how much of an effect this has. Sound will get reflected off everything to different degrees. Where each person stands, the clothes they wear, etc all will have very minor effects. I'm not sure anyone would build a stadium with shallow enough stands for it to create an auditory problem & anyway, like I already pointed out, they already amplify the crowd noise at WHL so they're bound to do it at the new gaff.
Anyway, its not just about sound in that case. If they want to provide the best view from as many seats as possible, you have to create a steeper stand, otherwise the guys at the top will be too far back anyway. It also helps make a 'claustrophobic' atmosphere, with the crowd looming over the pitch, bearing down on the players.
Maybe we should just ask for them to make the stands as steep as possible without making them dangerous.
Still, there's no harm in telling them what we want is there! Levy said he wants our feedback & input.

This site is kind of a complicated way of saying exactly what I'm talking about. It refers to methods of enhancing a musical performance within a venue for the increased enjoyment of an audience as opposed to creating and amplifying an atmosphere from a crowd within an arena.
What it is saying is all very true but not particularly valid in this application.
