With the Carling cup rounds taking place this week, all the talk of weakened teams and the importance of this competition arise once more. Even we are talking on here of not fielding our strongest 11 and we are the holders.
I know it would never happen, but what if it were spiced up a bit by bringing in the Scottish clubs? They could scrap their equivalent comp and make one worth winning. The Jocks would certainly bring some passion into it, as they love nothing more than trying to stuff us English. Our clubs would then have to rise to the challenge.
Maybe then it would be a cup that teams would love to win.
Perhaps there just isn't enough room for another prestigious trophy, what are your views?

I don't think there is enough room for another trophy in the current fixture list, best option would be to allow Scottish clubs in the Carling cup, not the FA CUP , fa cup is special. Although then you have to stop and think you are taking another cup run away from the smaller English clubs.

I don't think it would ever work nor would it ever happen as you've said.

but would the scottish clubs take it any more seriously than ours? rangers and celtic certainly wouldn't, and how would we feel if one of them actually won it, and took one of the english uefa cup spots....can u imagine....kilmarnock against ac milan instead of spurs!

I did actually mean in place of the Carling cup and when I said another prestigious cup competition, I was kind of insinuating that the Carling cup is not so prestigious at the moment. Sorry if I never made that clear.
I think the Jocks would take it seriously and if we didn't like them winning it, it would be up to us to do something about it i.e put more effort into winning it ourselves.

Im sure spurs would be putting evrything into the defence of it if we weren't in such dire straits in the league. i think talk of resting players is only because we need our best side for each prem league match atm

as an aussie im not familiar with the traditions of football in england. is the carling cup any different in format to the FA cup? if not why are their 2 cup competitions?

The Carling Cup (League Cup) is only open to the teams in the Football League and EPL. The F A Cup is open to clubs in the FA ie non league clubs as well as league clubs. Although you have to have certain requirements to enter. e.g a ground capable of holding such a game.

i actually believe the scottish teams would give it their all as in reality they dont play quality opposition very often and would relish the challenge . allowing the scottish prmier teams to compete in the carling cup would be a great idea .

I should add to my last post that we are still and probably will be the only non league club (since it's formation) to win the FA Cup.

As for an Anglo Scot cup I can't see it working. The idea is good but I can't see clubs being involved unless it meant a CL place rater than a UEFA cup spot.

I think the FA Cup should be a Champions League place and drop the fourth spot to UEFA cup. If the winning team are in the top three then the runners up take that place. It's about time the FA Cup became important again. There was a prestige in winning it now it's an also ran.

My apologies to bazzabelfast for not mentioning Irish teams, but you have to draw the line somewhere lol. Anyway, we don't play it with a stick in our hands, or is that something else! lol.

I saw Dundalk play Spurs and I saw Colleraine (Sorry if I spelt it wrong.) play spurs and they were good games. So - I'm with Oldskool Yid with one slight change. Include the clubs from all Ireland and treat each game on its merits, go to the pub beforehand, go to the pub afterwards, have a bloody good party to celebrate UK Football and make this Old Fart happy.. (Hope I didn't get too carried away there.)
