Former Tottenham boss Martin Jol believes the club are struggling because they have lost their sense of identity.
Jol was sacked as Spurs manager last October after three years at the helm at White Hart Lane.
The Dutchman helped Spurs to consecutive fifth places during his time at the club and they also boasted half a dozen players in the England squad.
Jol, who is now back in management with German outfit Hamburg, says Tottenham's transfer policy in bringing in a host of foreign stars has replaced the English core and affected the club's form.
"I feel if you work for an English club you need an English identity and I think that worked," Jol told the Sunday Times. "We were developing young players and were in Europe every year.
"I had six players in the England squad. Now there is Corluka, Giovani, Pavlyuvhenko, Modric...and Spurs have a different philosphy.
Identity
"They've changed the team's identity. They are so desperate for succcess that if they are not successful it will be a disaster."
Jol also claims Tottenham had lined up a move for Juande Ramos before he was sacked.
Despite his acrimonious departure, the 52-year-old says he has no bitterness towards chairman Daniel Levy or director of football Damien Comolli.
"I knew Comolli was trying to get Ramos in the summer, even when we had just finished fifth," added Jol.
He also rejected suggestions that Tottenham's management structure of a coach and a director of football was to blame for the side's current plight.
He said: "If you work with a football director who's your choice, or you're his choice, the system functions.
"When Frank (Arnesen) was at Spurs it was perfect. But if one coach leaves and the next one is changing 10 or 12 players what's the value of having the structure?"

Nah, the team needs geling, confidence and winning mentality in that sense they lack identity, but I don't think it has much to do with english players. Ofcorse it does, it's easier for an englishmen to gel with other englishmen. A lot of foreign players have been brought in. They don't understand each other, but there was similar situation in Man City last season and they started their season on high. It helped them gel and created good atmosphere. On the other hand there was a lot of expactions on spurs and the first defeat, well everything just went wrong and Ramos isn't helping with his constant rotations.
Yeah i agree. I think our main problem is that we bought in so many new players and they really haven't gel'd as fast we hoped them too. Its no doubt that we have talent and i'm sure if some of the circumstances were different we could easily be in the top 6 right now.
Ramos has made a mess of this season but I think that is mainly down to Commoli's incompetence in the transfer window.
No.
Its not like they got in a couple of new players. Its basically a squad overhaul. I know its not the only reason but its definetly part of the problem. Like i said before i think the terrible atmosphere in the dressing room is largely down to the unrest we had at the end of the season with berbatov. If Comolli done his job properly and got the players we needed early then there would be a much more team like atmosphere.
It's not just geling. It's the overall chemistry and that is hard to get. These players can't understand each other plus the team is in the bottom of the league, their confidence is non-existant. If the team started the season on a high like Man City last season, then things would have been different.
Also do you know how long it takes for a team properly to gel. At least a season.
