Going back 6 weeks we were all so optimistic going into the season despite an awful last season, bar 3 or 4 performances. We were aware that Berba and Keano were on their way out and had nothing but paper talk to feed on regards potential signings. Yes we had a tidy pre season but that has happened the last few seasons.
Looking at the squad now, and I'm sure some will disagree I don't think it is better than a mid table squad, truthfully compare us with top 4 teams and likes of Villa and tell me we have as much quality or any world class players?
So why were we, and so many pundits, so optimistic. We truly were/are deluded?
I was very optimistic until we sold all our goals to Liverpool and Man U. Then when we didn't land Arshavin I guessed it would be a mediocre season. Never dreamed we'd start this bad though.
Good Evening, I think we need to play a settled team in a
formation all the players understand, then I'm not sure
we have that bad a squad. In most positions we are OK.
I think Ramos is trying to be too clever. We held our own
at Stamford Bridge. Never believed the preseason hype,
but we have stronger first team than any other team
apart from Chelsea, (who we drew with) which we have
played so far. Tactics and team selections are doing their
best to make it difficult for us.
We have the same team apart from Berba, that started
the season, and that most fans were optimistic about...
We do have a good team. I do think its capable of a top-4 finish. That's contingent on them playing to their best and cohesive as a team though. There really isn't much difference between this team and the pre-season (the same team that put 5 past Roma and made short work of Celtic and Dortmund). Its basically just confidence and obscure tactics. An inexplicable start hits confidence. This hits performance. The only other possible difference is fitness, but I can't really remember how fit or otherwise we were during pre-season.
I don't think we were deluded. Just optimistic and then disappointed. It happens.

Agreed we were looking great with weeks to go as we still had a 40+ goal strike force and a more creative midfield and sturdier defence.
Thats the reason I was optomistic.
Its now however faded a little.
We should`ve seen it coming you can`t get rid of 40 plus goals and expect us to be top 4.
Happened last season - romped away pre-season and ....pow back to normal !!
We dont miss Berb thats a fact - he never played for us anyway so lets please forget the d*ckhead !!
Whats Gilberto still doin here BTW ?
I'm optimistic every season (for the last 50+ to be exact) and there was a time when we were bl**dy good but somethings missing at WHL and its not us, just wish I knew what it was !!
:bath:
I have not thought for a moment this season that we're any better than mid-table, and I don't understand why any rational person would. Our striker corps is embarrassingly bad.
Pre-season should be put into context.... Celtic were woeful as were Dortmund. Roma were playing one of their first pre-season games and were way short of matching a Spurs side well into there preparations.
Absolutely nothing should have been read into these resluts at all. We haven't lost a preseason game for 5 years, yet we continue to stumble through season after season.
We are bottom of the league because we don't look like scoring a goal, we can't retain the football, and we have been outclassed. We all knew that we would lose Berbascum. We were in turn left toothless upfront.
compare us to Liverpool, Arsenal and i can guarantee that they have a far stronger spine of the team than us. As do Aston Villa. Anyone who predicted 4th place finishes were indeed deluded. This was so far wide of the mark it's unreal. Even with all our new talent, i still don't think we compare with Villa, let alone Arsenal and Liverpool.
I had hoped we would do well, but having watched Spurs over the past 20 years, I knew only too well that they would let us down again.
I do appreciate what you say about pre-season. My point though was that although opposition was weak (and as you point out, it normally is), the current 2 main problems we are seeing now weren't evident then.
1) We passed aggressively, fluently, with purpose.
2) AFAICR we looked fit and sharp. We chased the ball which is a start at least.
Are are fielding the same team more-or-less but there is a massive difference between the performances. Literally somewhere in the week between Roma and Middlesbrough, it all fell apart. And now team confidence has has collapsed with it, that doesn't help either.
