I meant to post something on this after the Man United game but that thread spiralled way out of control so I never got chance! Now the dust has settled I'd like to pick your brains on something.
I haven't seen a thing of the game as I was in Newcastle for the weekend but as we all know we conceeded well into the 94th minute (sorry for reminding you!)
In football why is it that play is allowed to continue until that last attack has broken down, or that last free kick has been taken, or in our case that last corner whipped in? Surely the referee has an accurate knowledge of precisely how much time he needs to add on? He just stops his watch whenever neccessery doesnt he and then just blows when the 90 are up? Why is it then that you never see a whislte blown when a team are on the attack with the attack instead allowed to break down before the whistle is blown. Should the whistle not just be blown when the time is up, irrespective of what is happening on the pitch at that time?
The only time I can remember this happening is several years ago when the ref blew when the ball from a corner was in mid flight. A goal was scored and there was a big song and dance about it at the time.
Its something thats been bugging me since the weekend. Am I missing something?! Answers on a postcard!
The reality on Saturday, mate, was that there were stoppages in stoppage time, so really, I couldn't complain about the extra minute being played.
You are so right though. Never ever seem to find the whistle blown when either side's on the attack. I remember a famous World Cup game that Clive Thomas (?) refereed and Brazil scored from a corner but he blew as it was inflight. Goal scored, but disallowed, and Brazil failed to qualify!
By the way - have applied for City tickets. Should get 'em, but will let you know when its confirmed.
I agree with you, have you also noticed how some ref's will wait until the ball goes out for a goal kick and then blow the final whistle while the ball is in the air from the goal kick, keep your eyes peeled and see if you can spot how many times this happens this weekend, i bet it happens in at least a third of the Premier League fixtures.
You don't need to be sad to look out for them, you'll catch all the final whistles on MOTD.
it also depends whos playing and the current scoreline.
if one of the "top four" are losing, especially at home. you watch the clock you will be surprised how long those 2 mins added time are dragged on for.
couple of seasons ago me and my wife where watching a game where chelski where losing at home in the prem, cant remember what game it was. but they had some 3 minutes added on for a game with barely any fouls in that was enough. even the commentators where starting to complain it was rediculous when it got the the 95th minute. in the 97th (+ a bit) min chelsea scored and the whistle was blown.
i also notice the top four get away with whinging to the referee all the time, (manpoo when we played em last did so for a good 20 mins of the game at least throughout, mainly wayne gooney who was swearing and cursing the ref to his face all game with nothing done about it). also rarely get players sent off for awful challenges that any other team would get the ref sending the player for an early jacuzzi.
still pretty common knowledge imo, the refs play it different with the "top four" :31:
"It's about getting the best out of the lads and confidence. Life is about confidence. Whatever you do in life, if you are not confident you don't perform. It's up to me to get the confidence running through the players and if I can get that instilled you'll see a team that will really play." - Harry Redknapp - 29/10/2008
I also think refs at Old Trafford are very wary regarding time and adding on time especially when Manure are losing, they know the red nosed one is watching the time like a hawk and will not hesitate to give them a mouthful, now if Manure are winning then thats ok time is not so important...Hypocritical to the extreme
The whole notion of "injury time" or "stoppage time" is a joke.
If the referee was to stop his watch every time there was a stoppage, we would be sat in our seats untill about 7:30pm every saturday!
So the fact that referees frequently pull 3 minutes here, 2 minutes there added time out of there arse is ridiculous. because if they were actually stopping teh watch, then every game would require at least 20 minutes stoppage time, because the ball is rarely in play for 70 minutes, let alone 90.
I am still bemused by this "rule".
I remember him. Loved to be controversal.Originally Posted by funster

I'm glad this one has reappeared meant to post something earlier but never got round to it.
Cant belive what happened in the cup final after posting the original thread! The ref must have been reading the forum beforehand! Not that it mattered as he had already played a minute too much and kalou missed anyway!

The unwritten rule, as everyone knows, is that if Ar5ena1 or Manure are a goal behind (at home in particular) the ref must allow play to continue until they have equalised.
I thought that was common knowledge :5:
Well actually, when the time for added time is announced, the rule states it's a MINIMUM of that amount of time. The ref can take as long as he wants..![]()

That ref in yesterday's Manure-Portsmouth game must have read this thread as well because he broke the rules that state:Originally Posted by Old Yid

2: Penalties must be given to manure at old truffle every time they ask for one!
He must have been brave to do what he did and deserves a Victoria Cross
He must have broken the rules becaust that Queeres (Ithink that's how it's spelt) bloke was crying about it after the game. :35:
