Hutton can't play in Uefa cup

One of those ridiculous situations where that fact that Rangers have dropped into the Uefa cup after failing to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions league makes Hutton ineligible to play for us.

However, if a player has represented a club in the Uefa cup & gets transferred to a club in the Champions league in the January window........he CAN play for them!

Funny you should post that, i was just wondering if he could play in the UEFA cup and you've just answered my question, it is bloody ridiculous how it works the other way around.

I can't understand what the difference is, Hutton has not played in the UEFA cup, so should be eligible to play, i'm astounded.

Uefa Cup rules, Chapter 8, Article 17.18, state: "One player who has played Uefa club competition matches for another competing club in the current season may exceptionally be registered provided that the player has not been fielded in the same competition for another club.

"Furthermore, if the player's new club is playing in the Uefa Cup, his former club must not have played in the Uefa Cup at any point in the current season."

Er, say that again in English!

That sounds like he should be able to play to me, I'm sure I'm just reading it wrong.

But he has not been fielded in the same competition for another club and his former club have not played in the UEFA cup this season. Thats seems to be the 2 conditions to me... :4:

I think what it means is that because Rangers dropped into Uefa cup from Champions league they are deemed "to have played in the Uefa cup during the current season" ie, making Hutton ineligible. If they were still in the Champions league, i think he would have been ok to play for us.
