I believe there has been some confussion over whether a runners up spot in the Carling Cup gets us a UEFA Cup spot, just to clarify, here is how it stands for UEFA Cup spots:
England have 3 places in Uefa Cup:
1: 5th place team in Premier League
2: FA Cup Winners or Runners Up (if winners have already qualified for Europe and runners up have not.)
3: League Cup Winners but not runners up.
Any places not taken by FA Cup winners/runners up or League Cup winners are allocated to the next best team in Premier League.
Cheers ni-yid. It WAS all getting a bit confusing.
Im assuming the ni stands for Northern Ireland?

well, we don't need all that because we'll win the league cup and we'll be back in europe again as i should be!!! :1: :22:
'It's like a toaster, the ref's shirt pocket. Every time there's a tackle, up pops a yellow card.'
This is wrong.
We have 4 UEFA Cup spots
5th & 6th in the premier League
Fa Cup Winners (or runners up should the winners have league qualification)
League Cup winners (or the 7th place team, should the winner have secured a European place, or 8th in the league should the winners have secured a place and the two FA Cup finalists already be qualified via the league.)
A fifth place will be awarded should an English club win one of the Intertoto Competitions
I would hazard to say it doesn't really matter whether ni_yid or VancouverSpur is right - the fact remains that we don't get a UEFA spot through the Carling if we lose. And as it seems too big an ask for us to pull back into fifth or sixth, a win come the CC final is the minimum order for the season (though we're still in this sesson's UEFA cup :6: ).
We'll whip 'em anyway though, so doesn't matter. :10:
"The great fallacy is that the game is first and foremost about winning. It's nothing of the kind. The game is about glory. It's about doing things in style, with a flourish, about going out and beating the other lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom."
-Danny Blanchflower, Ex-Spurs Captain
Do you not automatically get back into UEFA cup if you win it? That would be very harsh, winning and not getting to defend it.
Saying that we'll win the CC and it'll all be good :2:
"It's no use just winning, we've got to win well."
Sorry, i didnt mean to be all "your wrong and I'm right" i just wanted to point out that we actually have 4 spots. Or did last season.
I'm not sure if the holders qualify. Remember that fuss about Liverpool? I think UEFA have tried to slowly ease out the principle that holders automatically qualify.
Even at international level, Greece were made to qualify for the Euros
Thats right, I remember now. I still think it's harsh not getting to defend it but then if your good enough you should re-qualify I suppose...

Good question, would be interesting to see.Originally Posted by Beats
