73 points will be a score to be proud of

I've heard in several places how finishing in the top 4 will be easier this year because the top teams keep slipping up. However, if we beat Burnley on Sunday then we will have taken an extremely impressive 73 points.

That would be enough to have finished 4th in 2008/9, 3rd in 2006/7, 4th 2005/6, 4th in 2004/5, 4th in 2003/4, 3rd in 2002/3, 4th in 2001/2, 3rd in 2000/1, 3rd in 1999/00, 4th in 1998/99, 3rd in 1997/98, 2nd in 1996/97, 3rd in 1995/96, 4th in 1993/94, 3rd in 1992/93

basically, only 2 seasons in the entire history of the Premier League would 73 pts not be good enough for the top 4 - in 2007/8 & in 1994/95

On top of that, only 4 teams other than us have ever broken into the Champions League other than the traditional Top 4 (that does not necessarily mean only 4 other teams have finished in the top 4 I might add, as qualification to the top European competition has changed over the years) - Blackburn, Newcastle, Leeds & Everton. Other than Blackburn, who did it winning the title with 89 pts, 73 pts is the best tally out of any of them, the closest being Newcastle's 71 pts.

In recent years, when the Top 4 have truly dominated, Everton are the only team to have broken up their club. They did it in 2004/5 & took 4th with just 61pts, a full 12pts LESS than what we could potentially do it with.

Only for the 1st 3 seasons tho. The Premiership started in 1992-93 with 22 teams. The 1993-94 season & 1994-95 also had 22 teams but from then on it has been 20 teams.

Yeah it's an awesome achievement, we wern't handed CL on a plate like many thought we would be, we didn't get there coz others slipped up, we got there out of merit, we got there out of sheer determination.
