4th Place Might Not Get Champions League Football

I just been speaking to my mate about the top 4 and he just put a point across saying if liverpool win the Europa League , 4th Place wont get champions league but europa league and Liverpool will. This is a very true possibillity.

This is off Wikipedia, i know this might be dodgy but after the 2005 saga with england have 5 english teams in it because liverpool came 5th but won the champions league , Now the rules say you can only have 4 teams from one country....

But does this mean If liverpool Win The Europa League , 4th place will lose out?

Nope - just look at Shaktar Donetsk, Fulham's last opponents in the tournament. They won the tournament last season and returned to defend it this year because they didn't get CL via league position.

what are you going on about, if Liverpool win Europa Leage, it will have no bearing on EPL 4th place and UCL, unless Liverpool finish 4th, which they won't.

The Europa League has nothing to do with the Champions League lol.
You dont automatically qualify for the Champions League by winning a different tournament.

Just to confirm the blindingly obvious...

Whoever gets fourth place in the Premier League this season will enter the 2010-11 UEFA Champions League at the Third Qualifying Round stage regardless of what other trophies - domestic or international - they may or may not have won in 2009-10.

So for example, if Spurs win the FA Cup (which would normally mean they qualify for the UEFA Europa League) but also finish fourth in the Premier League, they will compete in the UEFA Champions League in 2010-11.

On the other hand, if Liverpool win the UEFA Europa League this season and also finish fourth in the Premier League, they will not defend their Europa League title next season, but play in the Champions League instead.

The only hypothetical situation where a problem could arise is if Chelsea, Manchester United or Arsenal win the Champions League this season and also fail to finish in the top four of the Premier League.

This would be exactly like the case when Liverpool last won the Champions League but finished fifth in the Premier League (Everton were fourth). UEFA gave Liverpool special dispensation to defend their Champions League title the following season as the fifth English club in the competition after the Premier League quite rightly refused to take away Everton's place for finishing fourth.

yeah don't see how winning europa would get you into CL. beside liverfool are already losing to Lille at this time so thats always a plus. hopefully they do not finish 4th. would love for them to miss on Champs League. probably not going to happen but would be awesome if they miss on Europa.
