Tottenham’s King raises eyebrows saying Defoe better than Rooney
19.02.10 | Andrew Slevison
Tottenham captain Ledley King has raised eyebrows, saying Spurs striker Jermain Defoe is a better player than Manchester United star Wayne Rooney.
King is adamant that Defoe is the best finisher in the Premier League and believes he is deadly from anywhere around the penalty area.
"I think he's the best finisher in the country and that's from anywhere, 25 yards and in,” King said.
"I've felt that for years. He's deadly.
"Jermain will always score goals. There are not too many forwards who can pick the ball up 25 yards out and still be a big threat.
"He can shift the ball and hit it from anywhere around the box.
"He will hit shots before defenders are set, he always hits the target and what he's doing well this season as well is poaching goals in the box - in the six-yard box, two yards out- he's popping up everywhere.
"I've trained against him so I know that he's a nightmare to play against, especially for big centre-halves because the last thing you want is a little livewire around your knees.
"I'm delighted for him and he's one of the reasons we are where we are this season."

Uhmm. He's good, but what's happened recently? He's missed goals that anyone could of tapped in, he's flopped on way to many penalties. In my opinion he's not consistent enough.
I don't think hes the best in the EPL to be honest, but maybe that's just my opinion?

Sorry, much as i like Defoe, I just think he is not clinical enough.
Rooney on the other hand is deadly and he helps out all over the field.
Defoe does seem to have dipped slightly in over the last month or so, but then he's been missing his best mate Azza, but I'd still rather have defoe in my team rather than Keane, Rebrov, Rasiak and all the other dross we've had over the years.
id say defoe is 75 % the player rooney is
One of the big differences is Rooney's strength, also just look at Drogba for the Chavs, it's the strength they both bring to the fore, now that the message seems to have got through to Drogba about acting up we can really asses how strong he is. Very rare do you see Rooney get out-muscled going for goal.

I think what Ledley is implying is that Defoe is the better finisher. But I didn't see him mention Rooney. It's just the journo sh*t-stirring. Here you have our captain heaping praise on our striker. Nothing more.
It's to boost his confidence up... No one think's he's the best, but he needs to know the team are behind him and they think he is amazing, which he is![]()
It's the combination of speed and strength Rooney for being the big bastard he is really quite a quick guy for someone his size.
Rooney is the best player in the PL, maybe the world at the moment....and no I don't think im crazy for saying that.
<------ Arsene Wenger
It is true though that we wouldnt be where we are if it wasnt for his goals.
Best finisher? Possibly. But in terms of the better player... no-one comes close to Rooney ATM.
