Wilson at Downing Street
18 February 2010
Wilson Palacios joined 2010 World Cup Ambassador and Spurs legend Gary Mabbutt at Downing Street to help officially launch the Deloitte Street Child World Cup last week.
The high profile launch event, hosted at 11 Downing Street, profiled the initiative that will see street children from around the world welcomed in Durban, South Africa, in March to compete in a football competition that will highlight the plight of homeless children around the world.
Wilson commented on the importance of the initiative and the role it will play, saying: "It was a privilege to be invited to the launch of the Street Child World Cup at Downing Street. It gives children a voice through football, a platform to express their rights and celebrate their abilities - I'm proud to add my support"
The Street Child World Cup will place street children centre stage, celebrating their potential and providing a platform for them to play football. The competition will also help formulate a global set of priorities for street children, and the participants will launch a campaign calling for street children's rights to a full, healthy, and dignified life.
Countries taking part include South Africa, Brazil, Tanzania, India, Ukraine, UK, Philippines, Nicaragua and Vietnam.

Awh, Mabbsy - the nicest man in the world!
Did I ever tell you all about how he once phoned me up, at home?(Honestly! I'm not jesting or fantasizing here!)
It was 1987. 23rd August. His birthday.
I was a mere slip of a thing, then and he was my hero! For his birthday, I sent him a card, a letter and a donation to the British Diabetic Society (as it was called then).
I'd put my telephone number in the letter (as you do) and shortly before 7.30pm, our home phone rang. It was Mabbsy, asking to speak to me! Waaaaaaaaahhhhhhh!
He was sorting through some mail, while waiting for friends to pick him up and take him out for a birthday meal. And, on seeing a phone number on my letter, he thought he'd call to thank me for my donation. We spoke for about 5 minutes. I was a bit awestruck, but managed not to make a complete ass of myself!
What a gentleman!![]()

That is pucka Brum.
He must be in the hall of fame, must be.
Truely inspirational athlete. Proppa diabetic with pins and everything before, halftime and after the game. No boozing due to it and totally commited to football and THFC.
He would bleed Lillywhite.

Met Mabbsy a few times in the Bill Nic suite, and he's one of the most nicest genuine fellas out there, not like some of the big time charlies, got a lot of time for Mabbut.
I´m Glad to see Palacios making part of the event. Hope they include Honduran Children too.
