Patrick Vieira's miserable start to life at Manchester City continued today when he was charged with violent conduct for kicking out at Glenn Whelan, the Stoke City midfielder.
Vieira, whose career has been synonym*ous with disciplinary problems, isexpected to plead guilty to the Football Association charge and will be banned from the game against Liverpool on Sunday, the FA Cup fifth-round replay at Stoke next Wednesday and another critical league fixture at Chelsea three days later. In effect, he will be serving the 16th red-card ban of his career, having been sent off 10 times for Arsenal, three for Internazionale and one apiece for Juventus and the France national team.
Whelan, who began his career at Manchester City, was knocked to the floor by the force of Vieira's blow, the Frenchman driving his studs into his opponent's groin in apparent retaliation for having been bundled to the ground during yesterday's 1-1 draw at the Britannia Stadium.
The referee, Alan Wiley, did not punish Vieira at the time but has explained to the FA's disciplinary department he did not fully see what happened and that, having reviewed it on video, he deemed it a red-card offence. "The referee said he hasn't seen it," Whelan said. "I said to the referee, and to Patrick Vieira himself, that he'd been lucky." The Republic of Ireland international reflected: "Thank God I'm not more well-endowed; maybe if I was it would have hurt more."
Vieira arrived at Eastlands in early January on an initial six-month loan deal from Inter, with the option for that to be extended by a year at the end of the season. The 33-year-old was Roberto Mancini's first signing as manager after replacing Mark Hughes but the player has found it difficult to re-acclimatise to English football in his attempt to win a recall to the France squad for the World Cup.
The former Arsenal captain missed his first six games as a City player with a calf injury and has looked a shadow of his former self since making his debut in the 2-1 defeat at Hull City days ago.
He has until 6pm tomorrow to respond to the charge, with a hearing set for Friday.

The fact that he waved his arms about and protested that he didnt do anything makes me laugh and also makes me sick at the same time, typical Gooner. Even last night they where a disgrace, Nasri bumping into player's chests etc, Fabregas pushing players over, Campbell raping opposition players in the showers. They say they get bullied yet they where the ones trying to intimidate. Wish Vieira and Campbell and the rest wud just do one!
In a world full of City's and United's...there is only one Hotspur
