MODRIC ADMITS TO SUFFERING MENTAL SCARS

Spurs star feared he'd never recover

LUKA MODRIC today admits he feared he might never recover from his broken leg.

Tottenham's £16.6million superstar fractured his right fibula following an innocuous Lee Bowyer tackle in the 2-1 triumph over Birmingham last August.

Modric spent only three months on the sidelines, but the Croatian confesses the injury left him with some huge mental scars.

He said: "I was so upset - I felt like my life had been hit by a train.
"Everything I had worked for was suddenly in doubt.

"Not knowing the extent of an injury is like waiting for sentence from a judge in court.

"As I left the pitch all kinds of things were going through my head.
"Will I lose a yard of speed? Will I regain my balance? Will this change my life?"

There were initial fears that Modric would miss the entire season.
But his recovery was speeded by the wearing of a special air boot and he made his comeback as a substitute in the 1-0 defeat to Wolves on December 12.

      Stage fright

Just 16 days later, he crowned his first start in the 2-0 win over West Ham with a goal.

But the 24-year-old midfielder admitted: "When I came back I suffered huge stage fright, like nothing I had experienced even while playing big international games for my country.

"I did not know how fans would receive me or how I would perform in the game.

"I told myself that I had to be even stronger than before the injury to prove any doubters wrong.

"But in my first start, the jitters disappeared. I scored against West Ham after 11 minutes and I have not looked back since that day.

"It didn't seem to matter that I had been out for a long while. There have been no traces of the injury and I could not blame Bowyer.

"These kinds of tackles will happen a dozen times in a football match.
"I may not have played for most of the season but I am absolutely sure I am playing better now than I was before the injury."

      Shock

Modric, who was outstanding as a substitute in last weekend's win at Wigan, is thankful for the chance to parade his talents in one of the best leagues in the world.

"I had worked so hard to get to somewhere like the Premier League," he said.

"I will never forget when I got the call from the Dinamo vice-chairman Zdravko Mamic. I remember the date - it was Friday, April 25, half an hour before midnight.

"I was at home in my flat in Zagreb, just watching television with my girlfriend Vanja.

"Mamic told me the conditions Tottenham wanted to offer me and told me that they wanted to meet me. Myself and Vanja were in total shock!

"I had wished and hoped for this for so many years. We both just sat almost in silence. Then, within a few minutes, we were howling with joy!

"I spent the first three months in a hotel and now Vanja is pregnant.
"I got myself a flat because I could never be at home in a hotel. Now Niko Kranjcar and Vedran Corluka and their wives often hang out with us."

Modric's return has helped Tottenham's bid for Champions League qualification.

And Harry Redknapp's men will look to make an even bigger step towards that goal with victory over Everton this afternoon.

Redknapp is still sweating on medical reports after a virus decimated the club.

Up to 20 players and staff were affected and Redknapp said: "We closed the training ground but it's sweeping around so quickly anyone could get it."

I think Luka's best position is as an attacking midfielder playing in the centre.

With Bale on the left and Lennon on the right, and Wilson Palacios as a defensive midfielder, I think this would be our most effective set-up.

It also gives us the option to play with two strikers or just one upfront with an extra defensive midfielder (Tom Huddlestone).

      I like this quote:

"I spent the first three months in a hotel and now Vanja is pregnant."

He speaks, like the two facts are connected when, in fact, the time scale between them is about a year!

Luka Luka Modric, class act and seems to improve on weekly basis, when he first came I thought he looked a bit of a lightweight.

A few months ago, going back home from work, I was standing at the bus stop on Oxford Street, waiting for the night bus. It was 'bout 2am and was peeing with rain when all of the sudden, Niko ran past me and a few feet behind him some guy was shouting in Croatian: "Kume! (best man) Kume, I'm skidding!"

Are you Croatian, Gluton? I guess you must be, if you were able to recognise the language!

Why would someone call him "Best man"? I know that when Niko got married, his best man was a guy called Marko Maric (he used to play in France, but I don't know if he still does), Could it have been him?

Yeah. Tottenham Hale based Croatian. I really haven't got much choice but to support Spurs.
Anyway, maybe Niko was his best man or, as it's quite common in Croatia, they could be old friends that long time ago said they're going to be each other's best man. At that point they address each other as "best man" even if it never happens.

.... or that might have been Marko Maric.
