So getting ready to sit down and watch the opening ceremonies and wondering how many others on here are stoked about this getting started? starts off with bad news in regards to the Georgian luge racer who just died.
However i am excited for the hockey tournament although it does look like US will not medal again in that as Canada, Russia, Sweden and Finland look like the favourites for that. Also i have really gotten into short track speed racing of late for some odd apparent reason. The shortness of the tracks makes the races that much more intense to me.
Finally i do like most of the skiing events such as the Super G and Slalom.
Hopefully it gets colder up there and snow finally starts falling instead of rain. weird how about 40-45 US states have snow (i heard 49 of the 50 with the lone being hawaii that doesn't have it) yet Vancouver can't seem to get any of it. Those Yids up in BC, Canada enjoy the games and good times if there are any you are able to attend.![]()

LOL at the British response!!!
Afraid the winter olympics hardly catch our imaginations over this side of the pond! I couldn't tell you where it is, who we got in it or even that it started this weekend!!!
Super Harry Redknapp,
He wears a magic hat,
He couldn't fly to Anfield
So turned into a cat!
Its a shame that someone has died doing a sport he loves .

Well the Olympics to me is just a competition of which country can provide the most steroid enhanced athletes at the summer Olympics they claimed China cheated at the women gymnastics blah blah and some American girl went on the Jay Leno show and said "well I play like all Americans do by the rules" funniest thing I have heard in a while.
World Cup>Olympics

I live in Victoria, and it's been kicking off all over the province. We had a 300+ protest downtown by the government buildings yesterday when Stephen Harper (canadian PM) was here, as well as the mass protests in Vancouver this morning (although they have a reason to)

CBC News
Anti-Olympics protesters smashed windows as they marched through downtown Vancouver on Saturday morning. (CBC) A group of more than 200 masked protesters smashed windows, vandalized cars and newspaper boxes and intimidated pedestrians in downtown Vancouver Saturday morning, before being confronted and dispersed by police in riot gear.
The anti-Olympics protesters, many dressed in black balaclavas and masks, and carrying a ladder, smashed up to three windows at the Hudson's Bay store and one at the Toronto-Dominion Bank near the intersection of Granville and West Georgia streets.
The group also sprayed the windows with red paint, were involved in several confrontations with supporters of the Olympic Games, and threw marbles and spat at police before marching down West Georgia Street toward the Bayshore Hotel in Coal Harbour where the International Olympic Committee members are staying.
Retreating protesters use a ladder to form a barricade as police follow them through downtown Vancouver streets. (CBC) But as the marchers neared the hotel they were turned back by the Vancouver Police Department crowd control unit and the 2010 Integrated Security Unit at the Cardero Street intersection.
The police then managed to disperse the protesters into several smaller groups, and at one point a core group of the most violent protesters was encircled by police at the intersection of the Robson and Jervis streets in the downtown area.
Police said seven suspects were arrested, including one with a bicycle chain wrapped around his fist, and charges of mischief were pending. They also said they seized a bag containing a hammer.
A protester kicks at police as they arrest one of the protesters Saturday morning in Vancouver. (CBC) By noon, the rest of the protesters had been largely dispersed by police, although some of the protesters said they planned to regroup later in the day.
Meanwhile Translink, the Vancouver transit agency, said it was forced to close the Lions Gate Bridge to traffic in both directions because of a serious accident, but the bridge was reopened at 11:30 a.m. PT.

protest the olympics??? why, what did the olympics ever do to them?
<------ Arsene Wenger
it got really long and complicated.
Secret deals involving building of highway over sacred Native American land, as well as when they ran out of money from the Olympic budget, they took a big chunk out of Low Income Housing, Healthcare etc. so they could finish the stadium.
They've progrolred parliament, and Police have powers that allow them to arrest any anti-olympic demonstrators as well as raid houses where they believe anti-olympic propoganda is being made and or distributed. ESSENTIALLY THIS MEANS WARRANTS ARE NOT NECCESARY TO CARRY OUT SEARCHES ON PEOPLE OR HOUSES, AS WELL AS TO ARREST THEM FOR UP TO 72 HOURS WITHOUT CHARGE!
Its no secret that here in BC, most people don't really care about the Olympics; they've cause far to much trouble for 6 years as opposed to the 2 weeks that Van City is on the world stage.

ha ha ireland have a team there, and the locals have been complaining about the parties they have been having.i cant wait to see them sking with a pint in their hand haha
thanks for that heads up T.K. i have not heard anything on this before which i guess makes sense here in the states. i be more worried about trying to hook up with all these international hotties that would be coming to the city if Louisville ever got the olympics not protesting.
Ire i can see that now with them doing that. Would be funny as all get out though too!
there was a piece in the paper the other day;
Vancouver police also announced that they will still implement there policy of leniency towards Marijuana during the Olympics; They made no secret about the fact that many Vancouverites openly smoke marijuana joints and spliffs walking down the street with their morning coffee.
So if any of yo are over here make sure you get your hands on some BC bud!

Oh, Winter Olympic games always bring good memories. Especailly skiing... For such a small country as it is mine it's very-very important when somebody attains something. So as it was last time in Torino when our Andrus Veerpalu won the first place in 15km classical skiing or in 2002 when Andrus was 1st and Jaak Mae 3rd. I remember it really well that we watched it during our literature class at school, pupils were hugging each other, teacher was crying from happiness.
That was really special moment for me and for all of us.
But for me, sports freak as I am, Olympic Games are always a time of joy. I'm about to watch skiing, ice hockey, ski jumps, figure skating etcetc. That means - a lot of sleepless nights!
I was getting quite excited for the Winter Olympics until it started. I want them to play more Hockey on BBC, I'd happily watch that if it was on but instead they play poxy long distance speed skating or curling. Hockeys much more exciting...
