On a day we saw all four seasons at White Hart Lane, this was a very welcome, and actually, fairly comfortable win.
With all the parking restrictions in place these days we tend to pitch up much earlier than we used to and sank a couple of pints in the Bricklayers before heading into the ground.
The line-up was pretty much as expected with King dropping out again. Still no Taarabt in sight! Portsmouth were weakened. Something like six first teamers missing. Shame.
Throughout the first half we got the most bizarre mix of weather - and for parts of the second half too. Rain, sleet, wind, snow, sunshine. It was as if the Gods had decided that we should get every conceivable weather type in the space of forty-five minutes! It was incredible. Blizzard-like snow followed by five or ten minutes of unbroken sunshine that made it feel more like summer than it was was.
The football itself didn't quite match the excitement of the weather, although it was all very neat and tidy. We dominated possession, but Portsmouth actually created the first chance. A returning Spur - Sean Davis - chipped from the edge of the box (and a very deft chip it was too). Heart in mouth time, but thankfully Robbo got back quickly enough to tip over the bar. Just. A top class save actually, but these days there is just that slight uncertainty about whether he'll make it in time!
That was pretty much the only chance Pompey had as we asserted more an more control of the game. Without Jenas in the centre (assume it was down to that tackle on Wednesday night) we didn't really have any running, although Zokora burst forward once or twice. So we were really reliant on Huddlestone's passing, which was good, but from the long pass to either wing we didn't really manage to offer a great deal!
On the wings Malbranque in particular was disappointing. His passing yesterday was absolutely shocking. I lost count of how many times he played the ball straight to a Pompey player. Just as well they were as under strength as they were!
We had two really good efforts in the first half. First Chimbonda whamming a volley just wide of the post on the volley, and I mean JUST wide! James was rooted to the spot - well beaten. The volley was very well hit - from a corner I think - but ended up just wide of the post.
Then, from another set piece, Dawson smashed one onto the bar. It looked from our end of the ground as though James had got a finger to it, but either way, it didn't end up in the back of the net.
So, with all that possession, with restricting Pompey to only one real chance and never feeling particularly threatened, we went in all square. It was a strange kind of feeling. Bit like at PSV a couple of weeks ago. We were dominant, but it was difficult to see us carving out enough chances of real quality to score - despite the two efforts from the defenders.
At half-time the sun came out and all of a sudden it felt a bit too warm to be wearing a jacket and hat! Fear not, at the start of the second half the snow was falling again!
The pattern from the first forty-five was repeated. Spurs again dominating possession, but failing to really create the clear chances to score. Lennon was getting into the game more, but his delivery was still absolutely shocking. One moment in the second half really summed it up when he picked the ball up midway in the Pompey half, ran and beat defenders, got himself into a great position on the byline only to smash his cross over the bar and into touch. Oh dear.
With twenty minutes to play Ramos decided to go for it - as he so often does - brining on Bent and O'Hara. Surprisingly Malbranque was left on the pitch and Lennon withdrawn.
Pompey had one or two chances. One in particular was more threatening than it looked and it took a goal line clearance to prevent us going behind. Difficult to see when you're at the other end of the pitch!
Finally though, into the last ten minutes, we broke the deadlock. Yet another Spurs attack culminated in a scrappy couple of shots. Berbatov hit his into the ground and as it bounced into the air, Bent was fastest to react six yards out, beating his marker and picking his spot perfectly in the far corner to beat James.
One-nil! Darren Bent! At bloody last! Good lad. It was a decent finish. He was quick to the ball and directed it almost perfectly.
I'd said to my sister that the way the game was going one goal would do it. A minute later it was two!
Ball over the top down the left side and Bent was chasing onto it, beating the Pompey defender, nudging the ball forward with the outside of his boot, cutting into the box and squaring for O'Hara to side foot into the same corner as the previous goal.
Come on! Two-nil! Bent scores one creates the other. Can't complain.
And that, pretty much, was it. A fair result against a weakened Portsmouth side, on a day not quite as cold as the one in Fratton back in December!
We were good in possession, but once again, seemed lacking the absolute quality to score a boatload of goals. A few decent chances, and it wasn't for lack of trying up front. We just lacked across the middle. Heard that one before, eh?
Defensively there was little to trouble us and Hutton and Chimbonda impressed again. Dawson had a decent game alongside Woody, but we were lacking in the middle. Huddlestone was clearly the best player in the middle, although his delivery from set pieces was once again questionable. Malbranque had a stinker though. Shame. At least he'll have got it out of his system!
Berbatov was good yesterday. Very good. Chasing back, displaying his usual sublime first touch and bringing others into the game. Robbie, as usual, gave his all. Bent, you could say, was an inspired substitution. He's had better games, but probably not better outcomes. A goal and one created. Can't ask for more than that in the twenty minutes you get on on the pitch! O'Hara too, when he got on, offered a bit more progress down the wing.
Shame West Ham got a point yesterday. Would be nice to see us overhaul them! All-in-all a satisfactory performance and sets us up nicely for the last few games of the season. Sadly, I won't be at The Lane next week to see us (hopefully) smash Newcastle. Some small detail about getting married.....!
