We deserved to win - Harry
30 January 2010
Harry Redknapp was left to reflect on a ‘poor' equalising goal as victory slipped through our fingers in injury time at Birmingham on Saturday.
We had the better chances of a tough encounter at St Andrews and looked on our away to another big away win when Jermain Defoe struck in the 69th minute.
The home side saw striker ‘Chucho' waste their best chances - one in each half - but they refused to give up and were rewarded in the first of five minutes of added time when James McFadden crossed, Cameron Jerome headed back across goal and Liam Ridgewell, up from left-back, finished from close range.
It brought back memories of the 2-2 draw at Everton when we led 2-0 only to draw 2-2 and although we weren't as dominant as we were at Goodison that day, it was none the less disappointing.
"We deserved to win," said Harry. "They never really threatened us and we were in control. It was a game for us to lose, or draw in this case.
"They weren't in the game but when we scored we invited them onto us a bit, that was the problem.
"It was a poor goal to concede though, we defended poorly on it."
The draw was enough to maintain our fourth place in the Barclays Premier League but Liverpool and Villa closed the gap with wins. Manchester City face Portsmouth on Sunday.
Harry added: "It's tight. If we'd won it would have put us in great shape. Villa had a big win away, Liverpool have won again, City will be right up there and Everton won't be far away with how they are going. They are on a great run and won away again. You never know."

We dropped valuable points because we sat back and invited Birmingham to come at us in the last ten minutes. The same thing happened against Everton and I would have thought we may have learned. I mean, for fook's sake, you could see it was going to happen....we sat back on our 18 yard line and kept giving them the ball. Stevie Wonder could see what was going to happen, I don't know how Harry or the players missed it.
Yes, we were the better team but we got what we deserved. This will continue to happen unless we drastically change the way we approach the game once we have the lead.
Super Tottenham....from the Lane.
Is it the fitness of the players do you reckon? Last 10 mins they are worn out.
Yeah, interesting point but given that Birmingham were chasing the pill all afternoon, you would hope that we would run the game out okay.
To me it seems like a pattern of behaviour. We were in complete control but sat back from the second that Defoe scored. If it was fitness I would think that you would see us gradually drop in but as soon as we got the lead we defended 10 yards deeper than we had all day....and that is a recipe for disaster and not fitness related in my opinion.

It's been my life, Tottenham Hotspur;
and I love the Club
I think we see so many teams coming to the Lane and defending resolute . We obviously think if other teams can do it at the Lane for 90 minutes then we could do it for 20 minutes when we are away .
The problem is we play attacking football because we cant defend that well sometimes , So when we switch tac-tics its a recipe for disaster .
When Robbie Keane came on , I thought he would have been instructed to put the game to bed = as in tell the lads to hold onto the ball until a suitable chance arose . But instead we just allowed them to have the ball and attack us . JJ was a bad choice substitution with those things in mind IMHO because for a start he is a weak player - a weak link .
All in all we have to play for 90 minutes + , we didn't and we got punished for it . Its a shame because our goal was very well worked to break the deadlock = the first time Defoe has broken the deadlock since October . He had an earlier chance and left it for Crouch to scuff the shot .
Someone on another thread made the salient point that when Arry took Bentley off it allowed Ridgewell to move forward resulting in his goal, but Corluka was the real culprit and should go the bench next game as punishment This is what dissappoints me about Arry , he should sort out these kind of problems before its too late.
