vdv plays in the position of cdm but more in an alonso/makelele way than masherano/palacios style. deep lying playmaker, not much tackling, stays on his feet and contains the opponent rather than nick the ball off him.

with the ball he plays quite a bit ahead of van bommel, like a 4-1-1-3-1
without the ball he reverts to 4-2-3-1
