AVG is a bit heavy on resources since 8.5 was released. Avira is much lighter and has a better detection rate. AVG has to many false positives. While Avira may update slowly, it has the best detection among the free antiviruses. I use neither of them, I use Kaspersky, but If I couldn't update my kasper subscription I would use Avira. End of the day it goes down to what a user is happy with also.

I use a system called nod32 and it is supposed to be as good as it gets.

Both Nod32 and Kaspersky are rated as the best at the moment but are subscription based. Both have the highest detection rates, fast scanning and very light on the system resources which means they won't slow a PC down. I ain't sure about Nod32 but Kasper gets updated every hour on the hour with the latest threats. Again it comes down to user preference.
